Without prizes it would be fun too, and I was thinking that we could have everybody contribute some questions to a person, then have that person choose the better ones, check for the accuracy of the answers and then post the questions up for everyone to answer.

I'm more than willing to help run this, if details etc. are worked out. I agree with .neko. that having it just for fun would work better, somewhat similar to the current Battle of the Sexes competition being held at the moment.

This sounds really cool!

Perhaps we could have a little imput from the people participating, for example, we could choose a genre of book, and people could suggest authors or book titles/series' then we could choose the best (or the people participating could choose out of the ones we chose). And then we could find questions about the author/book/series.

Well, that's just a suggestion.
I'd participate, well, for some of it. I only usual read books in the Fantasy or Sci-Fi Genre :P

Good idea guys :)

Suggestions for organizing:

Suggestion 1: Put up a thread and give people one week to reply saying they want to join- that way, almost everyone who wants to participate will have a chance to join. Then, someone (myself, if you want me to) will post a list of... say, 20 questions. People who get at least ten out of twenty right will move on. Same thing happens over and over until we have a winner.

Suggestion 2: Put up a thread and give people on week to reply saying they want to join- that way, almost everyone who wants to participate will get a chance to join. Then, all the people that joined will be put into groups. Each group is given a list of questions that they must work out the answers to together by PM, IM, Email or another online service. They will have one week to answer as many as they can. At the end of the week, all the groups will submit their answers, and the group with the smallest amount of correct answers will be eliminated. This way, people learn literature facts AND group working skills.

I'd very much like to run this if no one else wants to.

Ok, so everybody seems enthusiastic about it, who is willing to run it?

Well, Dawn seems willing to run it, so we may as well go with that. Though if you need help, I'm willing to help too.

Should we begin it in here or in the word games board?

And Alex- if you'd like to, we could alternate running rounds. I could run a round, then you could run a round, etc.

Ask the mods if you can have it here considering that many PPT members never go inside the games board.

I really don't see why we can't have it here since the contest board was really meant for silly word games and such, right? This kind of intellectual competition should deserve a place in the Library Board. :P

Sounds good to me - if I catch you on AIM I'll speak to you there :)

Well, I'm guessing I'm co-running this. :D

This topic is losing activity, so I better ask my questions now.

1. Where should I actually post the topic? I know there's been discussion about putting it here, but I'm afraid it may not belong here.

2. What kind of books should questions be from? Any books at all? Or certain genres/books from a certain period of time?

When the actual contest begins, this thread (if the contest is held on this thread), or any other contest thread, will belong in WG&C. As this is a topic about whether or not a contest about books would be a good idea, it belongs here, as it isn't a contest, simply a planning board for one about books.

Complicated explanation, but that's what I worked out, from each board's thread guidlines/rules. :)

can't find the sig from this set, so instead, you get a <3 .

Question 1 has been answered already. :)

For question 2, I think questions should be set on notable books and authors. For example, some books may be liked by you, but others may not have heard of it, so it wouldn't be good to set questions on them. There should also be a variety of questions from books of different genres, instead of all on, for example, fantasy fiction.

You could also throw in some questions on Nobel/Booker/Pulitzer Prize Winners, to make it more of a Literature fest. A few questions on poets and their poems would be nice too.

Just my two cents.:D
