Of course I told her it was all right, and I drove the nail into the wall and hung the framed print, and it reminds me that other people are mysterious, no matter how much we get to know them. I will never understand why that picture spoke to Marjorie, that picture more than any other, but it’s all right; that’s the lesson. The surface of the print is flat, it can’t hide what it is, a print and not a painting, but the subject is this roiling sea, over vast unknowable depths.
That’s what we all are for one another, flat surfaces on which some turbulence can be seen, but unknowable depths. It doesn’t matter that I’ll never know Marjorie very deeply;
I know her enough to know I love her, and that’s enough.

-Donald Westlake, in “The Ax”

"Since I tend toward subconscious masochism, I joined a Space Anglican monastery, Space Order of Saint O____, baker, penitent, and guardian of moon hermits, whose name , being alien, cannot be pronounced by humans."

Pretty good.

How about "The wall defied the imagination, seduced and defeated it."

"The thing that really caught them off guard was the bathtub."

Setekh - Go you. Discworld is teh awesome.

The best quote I can think of at the moment is "Five exclamation marks: the surest sign of a diseased mind."

From Reaper Man, I think.

mostly harmless if i mind doesnt deceive me.

Quote:
"The warlord that commands the host that attacks my fortress is a sorcerer and has many magickers attending him."
"i will kill him and rend his soul for all eternity!" promised the heart of blood, turning and smashing its way through the tear in the mountain of Kahalan-Ghol before dissapearing from sight.
Honsou clambered over to the crack torn in the rock and looked out over the smoke wreathed mountain-side, watching with undisguised amusement as the unstoppable daemon smashed into the front line of Toramino's army.
"yes" he laughed" you go do that..."

From 'Dead sky, Black sun' by graham mcneill.

maybe its just me, but i giggled like an albeit nuts, school-girl when i read that

Dang. I don't usually get them mixed up... it's the sort of thing Terry Pratchett would say, though.

Both Hitchhiker's and Discworld are hilarious.
