Mmm. This started as an idea of drawing my character, whose a selkie, in her seal form. There is no real standard... form, and i've seen everything from mer-seal to uber-wrinkly seal. So this was my version. Kind of a combination.

This will be done for a dry print on a copper plate for my printmaking class. I'm excited.

I love the cross hatching.

*has no idea what a selkie is* Heh... It does look really cute, though!
The shading is... really, really good. The background is very simple yet goes perfectly. The hand/fin that's farthest away from us, umm, I'm kind of confused on how it's positioned. It's facing sideways, but um, what's going on at the top? And do selkie arms really bend that way? Other than those two things, it's a great piece, and it's cute. Whee! :3

I LOVE SELKIES!*fangirl squeel*

The drawing is really good. To me, though, it looks like she's in mid tanformation between human and seal...

And, the cross hatching is lovely.

Lovely set by the equally lovely Silja!

I couldn't find a good book (or explanation) of how selkies are honestly supposed to look. I've heard varying stories on seal/human and things in between, so I went my own way. Otherwise it would just be a seal. Meep.

Honestly, my scanner ate a lot of detail. Theres more white (much more) in this picture then what there is IRL, so some detail was lost.

I'm sorry I don't understand your question...? What part of the top?

Having never seen a selkie, I can only say yes.

Some seals/sea lions do have a bit of a catlike profile; though I suppose it's a bit more pronounced in this image because I was drawing from my head (and i'm not a resident expert on seals, only horses/dogs/herbivores)

OH!
Crumbs.
I thought you meant her back as in 'top'.
It's supposed to be bent. *shakes head* i'm sorry, my mistake.
(Apparently you can be in College, but you can't read... then again, i'm in Fine Arts).

Cup her hand a little, fingers strait (like curve it), and maybe you'll be able to see what I mean. *frowns* imagine you have webs on your fingers?

this is absolutely AMAZING. it might be my favorite thing i've seen from you, but that would be a pretty hard thing to say.

the pose of the seal is so elegant and regal, and the shading couldn't be better.

wonderful job

I'm not sure why, but the way the eyes are closed gives it a mystical touch. Excellent, definetley gives off the right impression. And like everyone said, the crosshatching is pretty much perfect. (I'm a bleh crosshatcher myself, so any good display of it amazes me.) I just can't get over the detail on the fur. It looks so silky, I'm convinced I can just reach out an pet it!

Ohomigosh that's just... grotequely beautiful.

Selkies, I think, are basically what Rowling calls kelpies - shapeshifting water creatures, with or without man-eating instinct.

Kelpies and Selkies are different things actually.

Kelpies live inland, and morph into goats, eagles and horses/ponies traditionally. They like to drown their riders by dunking them into lakes/streams/bodies of waters

Selkies can morph into seals, but if their skins are stolen by a human they fall in love with that human and take on a human form. They can even have human children (albeit with webbed hands/toes). However if they find their skin they immedietly leave and become a selkie once more. And the males can raise storms and control the water and stuff to take revenge on fisherman who kill seals.
