The day has just started. But for whom, no one knew, because within miles of this bittersweet tale we weave, there was naught a soul in sight…she was all alone.
A girl lay by the edge of a gloomy forest, battered and beaten. One of her legs was mangled. A large scar ripped across her forehead. But she was not dead. No, she held on to life- just barely, falling into a dreamless sleep. How had she come to this?
Among a rising population of man, her people- the Haii, was chased off their land. A few managed to stay together, build small villages, but the fate of the people were doomed. A tale of nonsense- that the Haii were people of trickery, was all of a sudden considered a notable fact that everyone knew. And it just went on worse from then on.
The girl’s parents, she herself saw them burn in their home. She managed to escape, scarcely avoiding the mob of “demon-hunters” that was leaving a trail of fire through the whole village. A village that no long exists because they made sure it was burned to the ground.
She ran- and escaped, with no more than a few scrapes. But there comes the price. The only way she could have escaped was to run into the Forest of Dark. It was merely called Dark, because no one was ever able to map the land on the other side of Dark, no one knew what was inside- for no one has ever made it out alive. But what made this girl special… what made it so that a simple runaway find her way through- even so maimed and hurt, but came out alive?
That, my friend, we’re haven’t found out.

(note: The fact that no one's made it across the forest, doesn't mean there's no one in this land. People may come from a *certain* magical place, or a *certain* city that was originally found away fromt the forest or a *certain* etc. But the point is, no one's ever a) gone to the land OUTSIDE of the forest FROM INSIDE of the forest or b) never gone to the land INSIDE the forest FROM OUTSIDE the forest)

The girl stirred. She blinked and everything rushed back to her. The pain of losing everything... her parents... and then to disrupt it all was the pain of her leg. She felt very lightheaded, but managed to sit up. She looked around seeing a small sack. Inside was half a loaf of bread, an empty canteen of water, and a small book. The book was nothing more than a memory of her past- but a few pages long, and blank the rest.
She looked to be about 19 or so, but she did always look a little older than she was. She had on a muddy tunic with a rope around her waist. A shiny dagger was attached to the rope. Her breeches were torn to her knees. The soles of her shoes were gone, but the rest managed to stay together. Her hair was tangled, leaves were hanging off the ends.
She remembered something and looked at the chain she was wearing. Yes- it was still there. She held a small blue gem, glowing softly, hung on a lapis luzli beaded chain. She kept it hidden because for a begger like apperance of her, she would have surely stolen it. She had actually found it, and she kept it, giving her a feeling of warmth and safety. Most surprisingly, she found it while fishing in a lake, hidden among the rocks.
In this horrible state, she tried to keep a strong spirit, but she herself knew it was hopeless. Whether she stayed or ran, she would have died one way or another...
She felt the strength run through her, and just barely was able to crawl to the nearest boulder, and hoist herself up. A crashing sound, repeated over and over came to her ears. What was that sound?, she thought.
A soft breeze carrying scents of many passed her, and almost at once- even before she realized, she knew what it was. This... is this... what they call the ocean?
