Mornington Crescent - Filsbury West rules

Sun May 25, 2008 9:55 pm

I was thinking we should start up a Mornington Crescent League at PPT - I'm sure we'll get many people to join in.

If you've never heard of Mornington Crescent, I suggest obtaining a copy of Mr. Turner's Dashingly Small Mornington Crescent, a very short book describing all the key things oyu need to know. Or, if you don't mind waiting a bit, you can just watch along. I'm sure any regulars will have a copy of The Official Mornington Crescent Rules, Guidelines, Methods, Strategies, and Techniques, 8th edition, so it shouldn't be that hard to help the new folks along.

Since I don't know much about the experience level of PPT, I figured for our first game we'd go with the Filsbury West rules. They're a bit simplified, but most major strategies still work. Plus, it's fairly easy to pick up for those who've never played.

As per tradition, we'll use this map, which those of you who are new can find a larger version of in The New Player's Guide to Mornington Crescent, with Markers, Doublets, Wickets, and All Other Needed Tools, a very handy packet good for keeping track of the game at home. Of course, that's never a necessity, only a luxury, and if you become involved in the tournament scene no doubt you'll receive innumerable "gift copies" - in fact, while I collect mine, I'm sure you could find someone who'll give one to you.

So, without any further details necessary, I give you... Mornington Crescent! And we're off!

I'll let someone else take the first turn.

Ah, I love a good round of Mornington Crescent! I'd love to get a league going on PPT--there's so few casual players in the southeastern U.S., and I do like to stay sharp between tournaments. :)

I'll start with Seven Sisters.

I'd like to play, but I haven't the slightest idea how... :(

I feel the same way, Tanner :P I won't be able to play until June 6th or so, so it can't start before then :P

Several newcomers, eh? Well, I'm sure watching those of us with more experience can help you pick it up immediately - some of the rules aren't so intuitive, but there's nothing so confusing that you can't understand it if it's explained to you.

Pudding, I appreciate the tenacity of such a rebellious opening move, but do you seriously expect to gain any sort of advantage that way?

I'm going to take a very non-traditional route - a recent update to Filsbury West dictates that players may take sky routes, and nothing requires that one takes a land route, so I'm going to board a plane with passengers in Hammersmith. Obviously, they'll have to wait in the queue, so I'll have to wait a turn.

I just hope you don't draw an anti-aircraft card >.>

Thanks to Pudding, I now have a tentative grasp on this game; as such, I'll play a tentative opening move and secrete myself away in Ruislip Manor.

Heh heh heh...

I'll use the Tudor Exemption and head to Blackfriars. (Now do you see what I'm doing?)

I will be starting at Aresnal.

Hmm...I really only have one move at this point, don't I? Unless I want to use my wild card, which I don't.

Oxford Circus.

Cross the map to Aldgate for my second move. That's the entire Maroon Line; I believe that nets me two bonus cards?

No, Tanner, it does not. The metropolitan route does not end at an interchange station. You had barely gotten one bonus card for crossing six acres.

Hey, works for me. If you'll recall the 1914 Convention, I can trade my wild card in for up to three rolls after the Aldgate is claimed.

Which brings me to...Bakerloo. Eurgh.

That would've been utterly brilliant if it had worked. Y'all would've been awed.

That's fine, WIS.

Because the card I drew was the Line Construction card.

So, I'll move to Paddington, and through the 1918 "Triangle Stations" rule, use that card to prevent any movement on the Green, Yellow, Pink, and Brown Lines. Won't that be lovely?

I will be using my Travel Exemption card to now travel to Holborn.
