Just a note from me- I'm going to be gone to Michigan from today to Sunday. I should be able to get on a few times there, and I'll try as hard as I can.

This wasn't something I knew of ahead of time. My uncle died at this time last year, and my dad wants to be there to comfort his sister and such.

So, I'm really sorry- and I'll try to check in up there.

In the episode Behind the Laughter, they say the Simpsons are from Kentucky or Massachusetts. That episode was a joke and was not talking about the Simpsons, but the actors playing the Simpsons. The first time that episode aired they said Kentucky, when the show ran again, they changed it to say Massachusetts. Matt Groening was interviewed and said that was a joke and not to look at that as their state.

I said 'if I had to guess' didn't I? Oh well, it doesn't mean anything... right?

Nope

... or does it?

... Nope.

Oh well, good. They live near New Orleans most probably though, or maybe Mardi Gras just comes over to Sprinfield in an unknown place every few years? Or maybe it just came there for some strange one-off episode-making time.

:P I kinda wrote a really long response.
Here is a quote I found on the internet...

Ticket Agent: Springfield, Massachusetts?
Herb: No, Springfield...

I think it is commonly taken that Springfield is nowhere...
All the evidance in every episode leads somewhere else, eliminating another one.

Hehe, I'll show more evidance...

T. P. Uschanov: "I just noticed that "Bart the Murderer"
seems to indicate that the Simpsons' home state (1) has
capital punishment and (2) is by electrocution. States that
do are Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana,
Kentucky, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and
Virginia." Yes, this is pretty weak in context, but remember
that we see this again in [4F07], [5F13] and [AABF01].

In [DABF03] Sweets And Sour Marge, Homer refers to the next
state south of Springfield being Tennessee. Assuming Homer
knows his geography, Tennessee is south of the borders of
Kentucky, Missouri and Virginia. {Jon Bertolas}

"kmano7" notes that in "Simpson Tide" Springfield harbour is
clearly seen to be on the west coast of America. Though it's
too hard to pick out a state, that narrows it down to
Washington, Oregon or California.

The following Shelbyvilles are known to exist:

Shelbyville, Arkansas
Shelbyville, Illinois
Shelbyville, Indiana
Shelbyville, Kentucky
Shelbyville, Michigan
Shelbyville, Missouri
Shelbyville, Tennessee
Shelbyville, Texas

And so on, and so forth!

I think most everyone knew it was a trick question. :P

Err... except for Clucky, since he doesn't watch it. XD

Well, it's a good way to prevent people to guess randomly :P

In case nobody has realised I was making a joking allusion to the joke episode.

There's also that slight hint to Springfield not existing in an actual state when you discover West Springfield is three times the size of Texas...
