Surviving January

With the holiday season over and the new year already begun, you are probably thinking about ideas to cure those inevitable times of boredom which are sure to spring up sometime in the coming month. Never fear, though, I am here to offer you some suggestions, most of which are fun and creative and not already activities you probably do!

1.) TV Shows on DVD Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you probably know that the latest craze (as far as DVD’s) are entire seasons of television shows in one box set. Why not go rent (from your local video store or library), or even purchase a season today? With a variety of shows ranging from The O.C. to Survivor to Spongebob Squarepants, a ton of shows (which will take up a lot of time), and a decent price, you cannot go wrong with getting these DVD’s!

2.) Have a Themed Party Unless you are an internet junky who does not do anything outside of school, you probably have some friends who would be more than willing to come over to your house to hang out. But next time, what if you made it a party; and not just a music and food party - what if you themed it around something? Try theming your party around a favorite book, movie, or time period; for example, Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings are excellent choices. Try to pick a theme that will interest all of your guests, and not just yourself.

3.) Make Your Own Website More and more places on the internet are offering free website hosting services; so why not take advantage of them? You can make it about anything, maybe even a certain virtual pet site we are all addicted to! Web-designing is a great hobby to get into, and with places like Link Not Allowed making it easy to make your own pages, now is a great time to start!

4.) Create Your Own Laugh Board Now I know you are probably thinking I am a lunatic for saying this, but a fun idea is to create a ‘laugh’ board, which contains any clippings of comics, funny quotes, or anything that makes you laugh! It’s great for when you are feeling sad, or even when you just need a chuckle! It is also a lot of fun to show your friends, so that they can see everything that makes you giggle!

5.) Get Involved In An Online Game Another great boredom buster is to get involved in an online game! PPT offers a wide variety of these kinds of games in their ‘No Nutrional Value’ forum; I highly advise you to take a look at the varying competitions and participate in a few!

6.) Write For Pink Ink The last, and most fun in my opinion, is to write an article for the Pink Ink, PPT’s official newsletter! You can write pretty much anything you want; an entertainment review, a Neopets article, ANYTHING! Why don’t you go check it out now (link to Pink Ink when ‘now’ is clicked) and join in the fun?

I hope that I have provided you with some good ways to prevent boredom in this holiday-free month. If you have any other suggestions, I’d love to hear them! Private message Ziggy on the PPT forums!

I do not think I will get the exemption, simply because I was the first one to post my article and more than likely everyone will know what to beat. But I figured being punctual would impress Mr. Ammer.

article:

The Fine Art of Procrastination

Now, some of you perfect angels here on PPT are probably horrified by this very title. Procrastination! Run away! You are likely straight-A students, perfect, 100% on every test, and devour a book every week. A large book.

Well let me tell you something! I myself am a straight-A student and have been known to devour rather large books at an alarming rate, but I procrastinate. For example – winter break, the perfect excuse. I have a trumpet solo in Jazz Band that I must write on my own, you say? I’d rather read my new books. I have to study a political map of Africa, which we’ll have a test on in Geography the day we get back? I also have a quite big packet full of questions that’s due the same day, in the same class? I’d much rather play my new video games. I need to clean my room? I would never do that, my dear, when I have a horse just waiting in his stall not twenty minutes away for me to come ride him!

In short – it is Sunday night, 9:45 PM at the time of writing, and I go back to school Tuesday. I have a trumpet solo to write (I can put it off, the concert’s ages away), a Geography test to study for (study tomorrow night, Tuesday morning) and a packet to finish (start/finish <s>tonight and</s> tomorrow). This is where it gets dangerous. I’ve pulled this kind of thing off many times before, but there’s always the risk. This is where it either gets really fun – or really scary. For me, it’s usually a bit of both.

It’s a delicate balancing act, because if you put it off too long, the guilt will weigh down on you, and you will scramble to finish it for risk of your parents finding out and being disappointed in you. I don’t know about you, but I hate it when my parents are disappointed. Not angry – just let down, like you should know better. This is what drives me to do it in secret, to finish it the day before and never quite mention that it is due tomorrow. Worst of all, though, is when you don’t pull it off – when it’s turned in a day late or you end up doing badly on the test. It doesn’t happen to me often, but when it does, it scares me into being sickeningly punctual for the next few weeks. After that, I slip back into old habits. Oh well – you know what they say about old dogs and new tricks.

Perhaps I’ll write another article detailing the results, but I’m pretty confident it’ll go over well. After all, I am experienced in this lovely, fine, dangerous art of procrastination.

(By the way, myself and PPT probably maybe don’t technically endorse procrastination because you can get yourself into major trouble, even if it’s rather fun at times and quite lovely when you pull it off.)

end article. :) by the way, how would I go about sending it to Yoshi? *happens to be slightly new to PPT don't eat me if I'm ignorant*

My mother (she works for a newspaper) decided to stick her nose into this when I asked her to read it. :P She stole my laptop, carried it downstairs, and wouldn't give it back. But I finally finished it. I hope I did well...copy being PMed to Yoshi in just a moment.

Project Runway

It’s the usual reality show drama - except this drama is about who stole whose dye for their latest design. Project Runway, airing on Bravo, is an original reality show, focusing on fashion designers. Twelve designers, some just out of college, compete in weekly design challenges for the chance to win a spread in Elle magazine as well as $100,000 to start their own design line and a mentorship with Banana Republic. Every week, a different challenge is given to the designers: anything from a simple word to a style. They choose their material, model, and then get their creative juices flowing.

The designers struggle to make an outfit to wow the judges within their time limit with the materials they chose. The next day, they fit the outfits to the models they chose and the models do their job: strutting down the runway. In typical reality show fashion, one designer is eliminated. Another designer is chosen as the winner of that round, making them immune to disqualification in the next round. This process continues week by week until three designers remain. These top three will face-off at New York’s Fall Fashion Week.

During episode one, the designers were told that they were going to choose their materials from a store where the best designers shopped. They imagined a fabric shop - however, the organizers of the show had a different idea. The designers, none yet eliminated, were taken to a supermarket, much to their shock and surprise. For episode two, they were given plain white cotton (“the official fabric of Project Runway”). The theme? Envy. By the time episode three rolled around, ten designers remained. They were told to create something that fits in with Banana Republic’s winter collection: either “my grandmother’s attic,” a theme where the colors are pinks and yellows, or “art deco,” in dramatic blacks, silvers, and whites.

The show also has two websites where they sell merchandise for the show and designs from the twelve participants, as well as auctioning off the dresses that were made for each episode. The popularity of some of the participants is obvious from the auctions; whilst (at the time of writing), one dress made for episode three is going for over $400 with twenty bids, another is going for a mere $25 with six bids.

The show will span over ten episodes, continuing until February 2005. Project Runway airs every Wednesday at 9/8c and is sure to hook even those who usually dismiss reality television. My mother, who usually is not a fan of reality TV, found herself coming back whilst I was watching the show to see their latest designs and ask, “Who got eliminated? What did she make? Who made that one?” Whether you be thirteen or forty, Project Runway is worth tuning in to.

Mon Jan 03, 2005 12:45 pm

Wow, some are done already. I started it yesterday, but I'm sure it won't be done before Wednesday. I'll get it in as soon as possible though (I know the deadline isn't until Saturday, but I'll be gone that day). ;)

I think you should PM runevalkyrie and ask her why you can't send PM's. She's an admin and she would have some idea why.

I'm sorry, I'm out of it right now. I am writing this in my second period class so I’m a little distracted. Instead of the stupid suggestion I gave, I'll PM Rune and ask her why you're unable to send PM's.

Try emailing one of them if they have their email address in their profile. Or when you post it on here, ask someone else to PM it to Yoshi for you, Id be more than happy to send it through for you.

Thanks for the offer. I spoke to yoshi and he said to post it here and he will deal with it from this thread. So it's all resolved
