My chinese teacher made us write a 500 character character essay. TYPED.

But, she "respects our opinions" so I'm just going to complain about it.
The story goes that there was this emperor who liked this pretty girl, so he kept her with him all the time. The girl was intimidated by him ( wouldn't you) so she never talked to him or smiled. Then one day the emperor took out these three immortality pills. She hates him, so she eats all three and floats up to the moon. there was also a woodcutter and a jade rabbit. That's why there's a man in the moon and also a rabbit and girl.
They eat mooncakes because they used to worship the moon and ask it for a good harvest.
The other story is that Chang He ate these immortality pills and floated up.
(My teacher made us do this all period.)
Ooooh I've heard that story, but it was different. There was an archer (I think) and two pills. If you ate one, you would live forever. If you ate two, you would become a spirit and float up. One day, the archer left, leaving his wife, but a thief came to the house. The wife, scared, hid the pills in her mouth and accidently swallowed both, becoming a spirit and floating up to the moon.
Anyways, about the mooncake stories. I heard one where there was an emperor, in the time of war. The troops had his citizens surrounded or something and they couldn't escape. The emperor made up a "new cake" (the mooncake), hiding secret messages for a revolution at a certain time, then asked the enemy to give these to the emperor's people to eat. Then when they ate it, they found the message and all took action at the same time, and that was how they won =D. They did it on a certain day, and that day is now the Mid-Autumn Festival. (I don't actually know if this is true or not, and my translation may not be entirely correct, and I might have forgotten some stuff!)

Oh my goodness, it's already the Harvest Moon Festival?! Yikes, I need to get to the only good bakery in town for my Moon Cakes. They are so yummy once you get past the surprise of sweet bean paste.
I know!! They're sooo good (especially if there's some egg in there!) My parents bought the white ice ones (the ones with jam and everything inside), but they're not really traditional. They still taste good, though.
