Is anyone on thir school's Academic Team?

Sun Dec 12, 2004 2:21 am

I am the only 7th grader on our school's Academic Team, and we start competition this coming Tues. (three days from now)

I've obviously never done this before, so i'm wondering if there's anyone else who's on their school's AT who could tell me how the competitions works. It should be more or less the same.

I was on my schools when I was in 6th grade but now I'm in 8th and well I didn't like it to much because my teacher was really way to strict about it so ya but good luck with competition.

OO PICK ME! xDD

I'm on it this year, too. I've done it two years.

Basically with the QR matches, you have a moderater who asks questions, and a caller. You buzz, the caller calls your name, and you answer. If you get it right, you get a bonus which your whole team tries to answer via the captain. If not, the the other team gets to try. There are hesitations if you take too long to answer, so be quick.

Good Luck!!

I like to think of myself as the comic relief of the group. :P It's my first year doing it (grade 10). The team is grade 9s and 10s. We're just gonna be competing with other schools in the area later in the schoolyear. No big Reach for the Top television appearences for us. :P

I was on my school's team for most of high school. I remember there being different rounds with different rules. There's the regular rounds where you just buzz in and answer questions. Then there's the bonus round where you buzz in and if you get the right answer, your team is given a series of bonus questions and a period of time to find the answers. The third type is the lightning round. Each team is given a series of questions and your captain gives the answer as fast as he/she can (the rest of you give him/her the answers). Your school is set up against other schools. Whoever wins a match gets to move on to a new match. Winner plays winner, etc. Your coach should've explained this all to you before. We spent a lot of time practicing before we actually went to a meet.

I wish my school had an academic team. But nooo...we're the Spartans, military brutes, home of regional champions for just about every sport but absent of nearly all academic activity..

There's a nice episode of The Fairly Oddparents that's about academic competitions-if that's accurate at all (which it probably isn't), I'd wager that good reflexes would be to your advantage.

Thank you guys. It's a relief to know at least how it;s going to work. I'm the youngest member on the team, an dI'm under soo much pressure to do well.

I have never been on one. I don't even think my school has one. Even if there was one, I wouldn't be on it because I only have a high 70 average. They'll probably only accept 80 and above.

I was thinking of joining my school's team this year, but unfortunately I don't have the time for it.

I am. I'm the only sane person on the team, and that's saying something. XD
