LJ, what's the deal?

Wed Dec 15, 2004 3:45 pm

ok, i know that loads of people have LJ accounts, but whats the deal with it? what's it for, and how does it work? (i'm being particuarly clueless today, but i've wanted to know for a while but have not got round to asking anyone)

Basically, you create an account, and you then have an online journal that you can write in as much as you want. You can decorate your journal page like a webpage. You can make it private where only you can see it, or public where all can see it. If others can see your entries, they can comment on them (though you can disable commenting). You can also make your journal friends-only so that only people on your LJ friends list can see your journal.
Your journal will also have a Friends page, which shows recent journal entries of the people on your friends list, and you can read them and comment. LJ is a good way for friends to stay in touch with eachother. Some people make an entry everyday saying what they did that day. While others make an entry only when something special happens. Still others use their LJ solely for ranting purposes.
There are also LJ communities you can join. These are like usergroups. There's one for every subject under the sun.

You can also be introduced to the wonderful world of memes...

You musy be careful, though. Memes are very addicting. :)

LJ's are also a good place for being rather crazy in general.

I've made one too...

What are memes?

memes are just like quizzes. Orange faerie ( that was her name last year...not sure what it is now) is the queen of meme's on my friend list.

I used to have an LJ accounted..I neglected it.

Don't see what the big deal is.

LJ is sort of like a diary. That you can share with complete strangers. Or friends. Or keep it just to yourself. That's free. And highly customizeable and stuff.

It can be very addicting after a while if you really get into it.

Its a totally kooky way of having a private diary you deliberately write to show to other people. A nice way of showing off apparantly private thoughts to other people - Ergo, a waste of the internet.
