For anyone who's interested... :)

one question- why the heck would the FBI even care? is there even a way for the police to look into some thing like that?

Sat Mar 12, 2005 8:59 pm

He/she is holding the domain hostage for a large payment that we cannot front. We have contacted the FBI regarding the criminal side of this issue

Geez, you'd think someone was kidnapped or something. All over a silly website.

It's Blackmailing/ransoming which is generally illegal.

Tag-board is a pretty big website. I'm not surprised they called in the FBI over it being hacked...

yes, but seeing as the FBI likely has bigger fish to fry... why would they even care about some website?

Since they clearly were able to post a message to tell everyone, can they not get their site back on their own? Or... cancel the domain?

Not really. The Federal Bureau Intelligence is a government agency that acts inside the US.

"<i>Terrorism refers to the use of violence for the purpose of achieving a political, religious, or ideological goal through intimidation or by instilling fear. The targets of terrorist acts can be government officials, military personnel, people serving the interests of governments, or civilians. </i>"

FBI always does have interest in terrorism.

LOL are you trying to say that someone hacking a website is an act of terrorism?? I definatly do not make that connection... and neither did they on their post.

Does it honestly matter who is investigating the crime?

Yes I did. Reread the the italic paragraph.

Here it is for your benefit.

Terrorism refers to the use of violence... ... through intimidation or by instilling fear... ...The targets of terrorist acts can be civilians.

<sarcasm>Of course, hacking a website is NOT a violent act, nor is it intimidating to civilians. Of course not. What was I thinking. Stupid me</sarcasm>

Terrorism isn't just about flying planes into large skyscrapers or driving c4 packed cars into buildings.

Well, the FBI want to catch hackers as they are dangerous. So the FBI would be interested because of the blackmail and the fact a hacker has infiltrated that system, so if they catch the hacker then it's one less hacker they have to worry about. And I aggree with xerai. They would also look into this because of the terrorism side to it as terrorists do get hackers to try and infiltrate systems to gain important information, maybe even do some serious damage. So that is why the FBI may be interested.

Actually, the FBI has a department for dealing with websites... the website Bonzaikitten, which I'm not posting a link to because it's so controversail, has been repeatedly reported to it, which is how I know about the department... Anyway, things such as hacking and ransoming websites, and websites which depict law breaking are dealt with in this department... The people who did this could actually be arrested for it.

The FBI has more than 5 people in black suits on its staff, people. It's HUGE. They have sections and sub-sections for dealing with this kind of thing. It operates on many different levels.

Also Tag-Board isn't just a tiny little website someone has made for fun. It's a business too and people could be losing jobs through this. Someone has to run it.

Yes. They have a department dealing with computer crimes, I believe. They are not all about going to houses catching big-time crooks as many people believe.
