Lightning+Electronics=BOOM

Sat Jul 30, 2005 7:29 pm

Last Wednesday, I got the same storm that Butterflyhornet was worried about. I didn't get any tornados, but the lightning was so bad I lost several electronic devices, specifically, my cable modem, a DVD player, and a couple of lights (though who cares about the DVD player and lights?). Hence why I wasn't here for a few days. The modem was just replaced an hour ago, and for a few moments we even though the router was fried, but we only needed to change a few settings.

Anyone else lose their internet and/or other beloved machines in a thunder storm?

I lost all channels above 100. :(

I lost my modem once.

I've lost 3 modems, 2 computers, 5 telephones...And I can't remember what else to lightning. Granted, it was out in the country and in an old house with poor electrical work. I was actually using surge protectors on the computers and modems. Yeah, that worked.

Oh how I love living in town in a newish apartment that doesn't fry everything I own. I miss the quiet of the country though...*glares at loud cars going by*

I've never lost anything to lightning, though I have lost a power supply to exploding =/

I don't think I've lost anything to lightning, but we've lost the cable modem once for some random reason, and when my dad first bought his computer (it's a 5-year-old Dell), it was one of those "few" Dells that crash unexpectedly, so we had to get a whole new system. He's also had to replace the hard drive 2 times, even though one time the problem was the keyboard. -_-

We lost a brand new TV we'd only had a week before. Gah, I was annoyed!

I lost my modem recently, probably in the same storm as you, DN. :P

When I was growing up we lost 3 TVs to lightning since it was the days of big antenas on the roof lol. My dad finally crawled up there and put a lightning rod next to the antena since it was taller... never lost another TV to it :3

I got that storm here too. Luckily the worst that happened was my satellite got knocked offline and TV was out until we could get out and fix it.

Was it on Wednesday, around 5:00PM? If so, it probably was. You probably weren't close enough to the lightning to hear it shake your house, as well as those popping sounds you get right before the thunder (or, perhaps the popping was the circuitry in my DVD player exploding).

Come to think of it, VCRs always seem to die during electrical storms in my household. Not that it's a problem, those weren't expensive at all during my lifetime.

I had lightning hit my cable box a couple years ago. It knocked out my internet, and all my TV. And our provider wouldn't come out for over a week. Thankfully I as at camp most of the time... but still; most BORING WEEKEND EVER!
Bah! It was awful.

Nope, no electronic devices. I've always lived around so many trees that I have never heard of a power pole or power line being struck by electricity within a hundred miles of my hometown, or current tax zone.

There's been a couple of times I thought our TVs got fried, but then I remembered that most TVs don't turn on automatically after the power comes back, unlike other devices (like my GameCube that I've been playing multiple times while the power went out). I'm not that bright. :P

I was playing my guitar in a thunderstorm once, (100w amp) and it like... exploded.

Didn't stop working, just electrical whatnot went everywhere.
