WASHINGTON - Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Saturday evening at his home in suburban Virginia, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg.

A statement from the spokeswoman said he was surrounded by his three children when he died in Arlington.

"The Chief Justice battled thyroid cancer since being diagnosed last October and continued to perform his dues on the court until a precipitous decline in his health the last couple of days," she said.

Rehnquist was appointed to the Supreme Court as an associate justice in 1971 by President Nixon and took his seat on Jan. 7, 1982. He was elevated to chief justice by President Reagan in 1986.

Jeez. I'm in Washington right now for my cousin's wedding. At the reception in the hotel I was in the room drying my hair off from swimming and his was on the news. Sad. Very sad. :(

Oh man. Now Pat Robertson is going to try to take credit for this becausea few months ago he got his audience to pray for... vacancies on the Supreme Court.

Good ol' Pat. Always telling others, be it presidents or deities, to off somebody. Super classy.

Yes, let's make this about Pat Robertson, and not even mention being sorry about the fact someone died. That's also really super classy.

Anyway, I heard about this- and it's a sad day for the Supreme Court. You may not agree with his positions- but he was a good man. He will be missed.

And now this morning President Bush nominated Roberts to take his place. Hm.
