Are there any words that instantly grab your attention any time you hear, or that you'll hear clearly in a conversation halfway across a room when you can't hear anything else those people are saying?
I noticed today that I can hear America/American from a good half a room away, and always turn around when I do. I can hear my name even farther...
So, am I just weird, or do other people have things like that too?

Very easy to know why.

Any of my close friends' names, my name (or any variation, which can get quite annoying since my name can be shortened to what is usually a guy's name and strangely there always seems to be a bunch of guys around with that name), online/internet maybe, certain things to do with my field of study.

Anything like "Amethyst", for example, or someone's name on the Internet.

Ipod - Mainly because I was the first one to get one at my school.
Etnies - I'm obsessed with the company.
Luna Park - Where I work. I like to hear what people have to say about it.

Aww, I'm touched
Age of Empires. I can pick up an Age themed conversation from across a room. Also the names of anime I like, and swear words, of course.

Any kind of woodwind will grab my attention in a jiffy. Also, the names of people I know, even if they're not talking about the same person, will be quickly noticed by me.

If anyone drops an F-bomb around me, I'm sure to hear it.

Anything to do with Alphabet Soup or Whimpy.
I also notice when anyone says Neil Poznansky, which happens a surprising ammount.

Due to Post-Potter Basket-Case Syndrome, I can hear words like "tower" from far, far away. I learned long ago not to assume people were talking about Sirius when they said those syllables, but I still prick up my ears whenever I hear it.

Lol, me too. That's probably what I notice the most.
That and 'sock,' (I always assume they're talking about me) 'Holly,' or something like 'her hair.' Which isn't a single word, but occasionally I get people saying that loudly around me, so I look over there.
Also, let's see...names of bands or shows I like usually attract my attention.

My name...
Thats about it.
I once heard someone say my name like, on the other side of a room, and I rushed over there and demanded to know what they said about me.
