Tengwar (quenya mode)

Sun Oct 02, 2005 10:00 am

Well, I started to learn to write tengwar in the quenya mode yesterday. It's pretty easy when you get the hang of it really. AND I bugged a lot of people on msn messenger about it :P

I was wondering if anyone else here does it... sooo... do you?

Here's an example;

It says, of course, "pink poogle toy".

As a more explanatory text for the writing/image:

Code:
I       O O   E   O
P N K   P : G L   T :
                    Y

Also, I'll be happy to write anyone's name/username here by request, I need the training anyway. Since this isn't supposed to be a request thread you could PM me about that though, m'kay?

ROFL I used to take notes in Tengwar. Drove a lot of people nuts (because everyone used to sleep during lectures).

thank you, I was just going to ask that. Is it like some type of combination of the letters etc...I see how the I is mixed in with the P but other than that it looks totally different. How did you start learning?

i wanna learn... its a bit confusiong tho.. that way i have a good excuse for no-one to read my notes.. or a good reason to tick off my teachers writing like that...

That looks cool! I wanna learn now. o_o

That does look really awesome! And it'd be really nice to take notes so nobody else could read them

I used to randomly write stuff in fake Greek (I was writing in English, but using the Greek alphabet).

unless im getting myself mixed up here;
AKA: the dark tongue, the language used by the dark forces, probably created by Melkor; the first evil.
ie: lord of the rings, its seen exclusivly on the ring as far as i remember.
(in the "trilogy" anyway)

I think you got mixed up :P

Tengwar is an artificial script which was invented by J. R. R. Tolkien. In his works, the Tengwar script, supposedly invented by Fëanor, was used to write a number of the languages of Middle-earth, including Quenya and Sindarin, but it can also be used to write other languages, such as English. The word tengwar is Quenya for "letters". The corresponding singular is tengwa, "letter".

Quenya and Sindarin on the other hand are two variations of elven languages in Tolkien's works, Quenya is used by high elves and Sindarin is the language of the gray elves. When writing tengwar in Quenya and in Sindarin there are some small differences in the placement of vowels etc.

... so now you know :D

Basically I started off just by browsing webpages, trying to summarize the whole lot into my own notebook and then it's pretty much just about the training. I really want to lear this by heart. Also I need to keep searching for errors and additional facts etc. since it's not just as simple as our regular alphabet. For example there are two signs for the letter 'R', and depending on the pronounciation you have to choose one or the other. Then there are also a few letter combinations, such as "LD", when the following happens:

LD becomes [LD]

It's in the appendix of RotK, if I'm not mistaken...

Cool! Tengwar! I haven't written that in ages. We used to pass notes in Tengwar in my old school. ;)
