Sat Jan 07, 2006 8:35 pm

Do any of you know of any Airline sites besides Expedia.com, Orbitz.com and Priceline.com?

I'm looking to get a one way ticket to England, given it's in seven months i'm just kinda looking around on times and stuff, cause i'm wanting to arrive there at like 5-7 in the Afternoon there (12-2P here) and all that stuff...

Thankies

Try some of the big companies that fly to the UK (e.g. British Airways, United Airlines, American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, etc.)

If you're in America, you may have to get a connecting flight down to England through either Glasgow, Edinburgh or Prestwick, as that's what I had to do when I flew back from America.

Only if you fly on a plane made of paper, real planes fly from london to san fransisco.

look up which airlines fly into where you want to go (or out of where you want to go from) using the airports website and then look on the airlines website - you'll be able to see the timetables on there

http://www.kelkoo.com is a good website that will let you search through a few websites. That's what we used when we went to America. Dunno if you can do it the other way.

The big UK aeroplane chains that you may want to look up are British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Airtours (They've changed their name, but don't fly with them anyways. Honestly, awful. Evil.) There's probably a few I've missed out, but they really are the best ones anyway. There will be loads of American airlines that you know as well.

Well

Well, i'm going to to live in Gateshead (newcastle) England. Flights from America connect (so far from what i've seen) either from Indy to Chicago or Cincinatti. From there, it's about an 8 hour flight to London, from London to Newcastle.

I might have found a place called Cheaptickets.com, Airline tickets are like 500.00 for ROUND TRIP! That's like 500.00 less, so I've thought about getting/looking into that one (and not get on the flight back) to save more money.

but if you guys got any suggestions, please tell.

Well if you are going to Newcastle then you are not going to get a direct flight there from the US. You will need to land at one of the major airports in England, Newcastle's airport doesn't accept direct flights from the US. I found United Airlines to be the cheapest for flying from UK to US, however that was round trip and for a one month period. I think roundtrip tickets are cheaper than open ended (i think that's what they call them) tickets.

I think 500 is probably the cheapest you will find for round trip, that's if you are already including the fee for a flight from London or whatever airport to Newcastle. What would be even cheaper would be flying to London and then driving or going on bus to Newcastle.

I've seen specials on cheaptickets.com that are like 200.00 for a flight to UK..however they limit the cities you are departing from. Also, with cheap tickets you have to becarefull and see what dates the tickets are allowing you to leave on, a lot of the times you have to go by their limitations.

Dont just buy a ticket because it's cheap - you're going to be on that plane for 6+ hours - you do not want to be on a major budget airline where you will be super uncomfy (rather than just uncomfy!) and possibly hungry etc. Unless you really cant afford it, i would reccommend checking out which airline those cheap tickets are on and checking you wont be treated like cattle, as its not worth the money you'll save!

I would not reccommend getting the bus. busses make every journey about 3 times as long as they should be - i would recommend driving or getting the train.

Quick disclaimer: I'm in Australia, so I guess your situation might be kinda different!

But anyway... I just booked a flight to England through a travel agent, and it was actually really good. She showed me a list of all the different airlines and the prices they could provide, side by side, and also gave a quick run-down of the pros and cons of each. To catch my main overseas flight, I have to get a short domestic flight; and she was nice enough to admit that I'd be better off booking that myself (with a smaller, cheaper airline that her company doesn't deal with).

If visiting a travel agent is free where you are, I'd recommend it. You could just listen to their advice and do it on your own anyway, maybe ;)

My flights from here to the US are 12+ hours, and all I care about is the price... Unless you fly first class, it won't be that comfy, amost all airlines are the same. And unless you fly charter, you'll get food; and maybe it's just me, but 6 hours isn't that long, if necassary bring food...
I'd be willing to fly on plastic chairs if the flight was 200 dollars cheaper.

Anyhow, try googling you destintation + the words flight seat. Getting a one way isn't too hard.

Yeah, I know not to go for the cheapest just because it's cheap. I don't have every intent todo that. I am trying to conserve money in the best way possible because if I read this visa thing right, I won't be able to hold a job there untill the end of a six month period, which means I'll have to have enough money (US dollars) in order to pay rent at the place i'm staying (100 pound month).

I have considered a flight from and to London, then getting a train or something. Lubbers the trains. Gateshead/Newcastle (driving wise) is about 8 hours north of London, and being on a train would likely be about half that time (which would be the time I'd have to wait (3 hours) plus the flight (1 and half hour)), so it might be more fun to get on the train instead lol. I don't plan on having many bags as it is, I plan on shipping what little I have there.

Anyone have any Airplane Folks they enjoyed a great deal?

I flew to American twice using Virgin and it was fantastic. The entertainment was superb and the food was surprisingly tasty. I also like flying with BA for short flights but for long haul, I'd definately recommend Virgin. :)

I think there is a big difference between the airlines even if you're travelling economy. For example, i hve experienced that Malaysian Airlines have more legroom than KLM and Emirates have funny sloping seats i kept sliding off. I think for a long haul flight (and yes 6 hours is long haul in my opinion) it does make a HUGE difference. And i'm saying that with 4 return trips to australia in the last 3 years each one being 18 hours flying time each way.

i wouldnt have thought it would be half the time. i dont know figures but i dont think the trains stop that much. its probably about 4.5-5 hours plus waiting time (thats a guess tho - http://www.nationalrail.co.uk would tell you). i'd reccommend getting a train, particuarly as you'll be tired if you've just flown so you dont want to have a long drive in a foreign country in a different car on the left hand side of the road to cope with!!

You'll have to tell me how the whole visa thing goes for you and how you find England :), I would like to visit at one point and have considered living there so I'd like to know what someone coming from the US thinks of it. And I would ask how come Newcastle etc but I don't want to be extra nosey :P.

Are you talking about our trains here?
Because you dont stand a bat in a snowstorms chance of getting there that fast on one of our trains.
