The Olympic opening ceremony

Mon Feb 13, 2006 5:17 am

Is it just me, or did anyone else find the opening ceremony unnecessarily bizzare and extravagant?

I want those helmets that shoot out flames. Those were awesome.

I much prefer this torch over the one in Athens.

That one was rather drug paraphenelia-esque.

I really love the medals that are being given out in this years games. I really like the concept and everything that they stand for and represent.

Did anyone see The Daily Show's take last night on the opening ceremony?

I don't. If I won one of those events, I wouldn't want a tire for a medal. Seriously.

Also, though the torch two years ago looked like a giant "cigarette" (in friendly terms), the torch this year is ugly too. I wish they would just use a TORCH. Shaped like an upside-down cone, with a burning thing on top. How hard would that be?

The other thing that made me mad was the part where women from around the world carried in the flag. Most of the women were successful, or inspiring. Even Isabel Allende was a moderately decent choice. But SUSAN SARANDON? What the SMURF were those people thinking? First of all, she's never been in a decent movie that I've seen, and she has nothing to do with the Olympics.

P.S. I hate it when they play that John Lennon song that always makes me mad, too.

I'm just wondering how much money went into that ceremony, and how much of the bill was footed by American taxpayers.

Footed by american tax payers? :roflol:

The whole damn olympics is payed for by american TV companies getting royalties for it. Seriously, any city that hosts it gets so much money from american tv stations its not funny.

Taxpayers?

Please, if somehow the american goverment pays for anything please share.

Even the atheletes are all sponsored by Nike.

Correction, all American Athletes are sponsored by Roots, and I must say all the gear looks pretty cool. But Canada had to be stupid and let HBC, the Bay sponsor us for the next 10 years or so, and thats why all the Canadian apparall didn't look appealing as the other years, gah.

Roots sponsored Canada for atleast the last 4 games(counting winter/summer) and their suits were pretty nifty. Then about 2 games about USA copys us Canadians and Roots starts sponsoring both USA and Canada(i believe this was the most recent summer olympics). And just starting this year HBC made a contract to sponsor Canada for atleast the next 10 years or something like that...terrible choice. I found out outfits quite...bad. Only thing I would buy would be the hat or boots. While when USA came into the opening cermony, they looked way cooler. Canadian team looked like eskimos.

I didn't really pay attention to alot of it.. but I did find that one part with all the people in the shape of a skier and then moving blah blah etc.
That was neat.. but other than that.. yeah.. it was all really.. I dunno... corny is the word that comes to mind.
Like a really bad low budget movie that's trying to be cool and hip and deep but just comes off as cheesy.

Yeah, I totally forgot about that, because it was so forgettable. Seriously, I don't think there is ANYTHING that would make me watch one of those again.
