And then there was this one time.... at Band Camp....

Fri Aug 25, 2006 3:34 pm

Alright, now that I've gotten your attention.

I'm just curious, how many fellow band nerds are out there?

I've played clarinet since the 6th grade, then in high school did the marching band thing, as well we pick up the bass clarinet, bariton sax, and alto sax for various groups. I dropped all those in college and stuck with the "regular" clarinet for the Notre Dame marching band for the 3 years I was there. It was glorious.

I also tried the upright bass for two years... but I never got used to reading bass clef.

Come! Share your dorkness to all! I don't want to be the only one. ;)

Hah I think you'll find a lot of people who play instruments here.

Yeah, although I'm not playing anything any more, at school I did Keyboard/piano and orchestral xylophone although my first instrument was voice. I have a standard grade, an A higher and an A certificate of sixth year studies in music - Music rocked at school!

I remember when we had a usergroup for the band members. That was way back in the day. It was a pretty big group, too, I seem to recall. Then again, I was never in it. One of these days, I'll play an instrument, but until then, I'll just be on the outside looking in at the band.

Well. There's for Abbey Road for that now, Ski.

Funny you should mention band camp...I finished my first real camp yesterday. College band's fun, but don't forget sunscreen. I forgot mine once and I now have a reddish tint.

I march with clarinet, though I'd have to say I'm better at bassoon.

Clarinet repersent! :P

There was a girl in our section that played bassoon and marched with the 'net.

And yes, college band is hundres of times better.... and more difficult. Dear god, summer in the Midwest.... geez, I seriously showered 3 times a day, my legs were sore...

But it was so much fun! :P

I'm not so sure about that, but I guess it depends how good your high school was. Mine wasn't the best, but we were pretty hardcore...I think a few of our sets were more complex than the ones I'm marching now (except for that souped up basics block we use at the end; it's nuts).

Oh yeah, it's a cardio workout, especially on the fast songs. You're practically runing to your spot during some of those.

*waves clarinet flag*

Played clarinet for 6 years, and I've played piano for over 9 years now (as well as singing). I've also played flute, cello, violin, and guitar at one point or another.

Yes, I am a music nerd and live down at the music department at school. Why do you ask? ;P

Well i used to be in a marching band an played glockenspiel, after which I was in a concert band and *attempted* playing drums, the teacher used to wig me out and make me nervous most of the time

glock huh? I know this percussionist who is a crazy bugger ont he glock... he goes psyco

Sat Aug 26, 2006 3:11 pm

I played the flute from 4-8th grade, but I didn't really want to do it in high school, so I quit. I don't think it's seen the light of day since. xD

Yeah I haven't touched my 'net since I was done with school.

This season though there's a ban "alumni" reunion during the Stanford game. So this year's band and all alumns that can make it go out on the field during pre-game and halftime.

The band is close to 400 members, and when they did this four years ago, over 750 alums came, from the classes of 1936 until recent.... so like, over 1100 people on the football field.

Yes, we were loud. And it shall be fun. :P

Serious lack of brass rep. here. I play the trumpet and have since 6th grade :) Right now I'm in my third year of marching band and I love it with a passion. This is the third year that the school has been opened so we're pretty small as a band, even though we're a 5A school. We have somewhere around 120 members or so. Even though I like the trumpet, I've always had a love of the percussion section and drums. I tried to switch...but they wouldn't let me :( They said I was too good of a trumpet player, which I disagreed with but whatever. Alas I shall learn some percussive insturments before I die :P
