Don't kill me, please but...I agree with the mother. If what she's saying is true (which I believe it is) and her son is a trouble-maker then I think it was good thinking on her part to call the police for something like this. Okay, so perhaps not for kind of wasting police time and all that, but I think her son will think twice before doing something even more serious than unwrapping a Christmas present too early. Sometimes, it's the most bizarre actions that can stop a child from causing trouble.

Arresting a kid for taking a frickin' (Excuse my language) Christmas present won't help curve his bad behaviour. Why not discipline him when he's actually done something really bad? And I'm not saying they haven't, but isn't a bit strange that she would jump to such extremes for just a Christmas give which was his anyways? It's obvious this woman didn't discipline from the beginning, and in all seriousness, I think arresting him for something as stupid as this will only make it worse.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but unless he/she is emancipated, isn't everything a minor owns actually the property of his/her parents or guardians?

My opinions:
I think calling the police was extreme and unnecessary, not to mention a waste of the police's time.
If he's punching police officers, the kid probably does need help, but so does the mother in terms of parenting. Calling the police isn't going to help him in the long run.
And I don't consider this newsworthy even in the weird-but-interesting sense.

To be a little fair to all parties involved, Countdown did name the whole family the 'Worst Persons in the World' for last night. The mom starred since she called the cops, but the kid was included in the award since he needed to be brought down somehow.

Well, even if it wasn't "his" till Christmas, a proper punishment should've been given. Not a waste of time phone call to the police.

yeah...it wasn't right for him to open early, especially since he was told not to by his parent. However, that was cruel and unusual punishment and a completely unnecessary extreme to take in this situation.

That is a bit odd and extreme. He shouldn't have opened the gift; but the mother shouldn't have called the police on him. If she was truly worried about his behavior; then she would have tried to do something about it before. Not to say she hasn't; has she tried counseling? I'm not sure what else there is for kids his age. Arresting him is not the answer.

If she has a problem son, chances are, she's probably tried every tactic under the sun to get him behave. At least she's trying to show him that there are consequences to his actions, regardless of how extreme. Good on her is what I say. Maybe now she'll find it easier to help for him.

Or she doesn't know how to parent and there's no one to help her. Going by the ages in the article, she was about 15 when she gave birth to her son. If she was anything like me at 15, she wasn't nearly ready to raise a child. I really wonder how much help she's gotten with her parenting--she must've gotten some, because she's managed to at least raise the child without him being taken away from her, but it sounds like she's unable to keep him under control by herself.

From what the article says, I think it's plain stupid. I really can't say much, I haven't ever raised a child. But it just seems, from what adults around me say, you wouldn't try to get your kid in jail. It seems, a little, to me like she's trying to get the boy out of her household.
If I had the sort of mother who calls the police for opening a present, I'd probably shoplift and whatnot. You won't know what's good and bad if your parents don't teach you. I don't if that's the case or not but..........
