Yangtze River Dolphin Extinct

Sat Dec 16, 2006 7:14 pm

Although it can't be officially extinct until after 50 years of not being seen... experts now say there's probably none left.

I for one find it terribly sad and sickening.

That is sad, sad news :(

I never even knew such an aimal existed. Only now, with this news, have I heard of them. Tis sad :(

I love river dolphins, and I hate that this happened. Can't say that it was unexpected, though. Let's just hope that the other four subspecies of river dolphins don't go the same way.

Mini-rant!

Articles like that make me really want to help out and do something important for the world. I got the same feeling at the end of Happy Feet. It is really upsetting to watch species slowly fade away due to things like ships and fishermen. It's usually unintentional but I mean come on, if you're removing all of the fish from an area, you have to realize that the other animals native to the area are going to starve if fish are their only food supply. And I've never in my life heard someone say that pollution was okay, so they should really know better by now :x

This makes me so sad...it seems like China could care less. As my boyfriend put it, they've spent the better part of the last two centuries destroying the things that make it beautiful. The first bad step was damming that river, essentially destroying those gorges. *sigh* I really hate commercialization.

Aw that's so sad. :( I hate to hear of animals going extinct. Before this, i'd never even heard of this particular kind of dolphin. :(

oo this is something I can bring up in my economics class - we've been talking about how China's economy has been growing massively and the consequences might seem small at first but they have long term effects.

They're so cute.. makes me hate people, we're only concerned about ourselves. Seriously, what right *do* we have to take all the fish out of the ocean when we have other things to eat?

technically the human race was meant to be made up of herbivores, so we shouldn't steal food from other creatures when we should really be growing our own food. I'm not a vegetarian, though I do generally avoid fish

I've been thinking a lot about that recently. I mean, we live in such a beautiful place, but we're destroying it ourselves. We really really should think about other creatures that live on the Earth :(

We're at the top of the food chain, and have been for a hundred, thousand years.
This... dolphin, is just the latest in a very long line of animals we have wiped out.

*sigh* Perhaps this will make people realize that just maybe a larger attempt should be made at conserving different species. Maybe harsher penalties for hunting or fishing an endangered species would work, maybe it wouldn't. But it's really getting to the point that something needs to be done.

I'm a vegetarian too... but beside the point...

that's a very, very sad story

Dolphins are my friend's favourite animals too :(

Nah, not really. Loads of people say that we're supposed to be herbivores, but we have the teeth and digestive tracts of omnivores. Most credible biologists say that we're traditionally omnivores. I say this as a vegan.

However, we're mostly past the point where we need to eat whatever we find. There are alternatives.
