I, Ammer, almost died.

It's true, I almost died yesterday.

And this isn't a comical "I almost ran into a car so I almost died" type thing; I actually almost died. The reason I'm posting this is to warn you of the dangers of the subway and because, it's been ages since I've posted a topic in this particular forum. Now, here's the story,

As some of you know, I host a radio show at my University. After the show, my friends (Who came to visit me from high school) and I took the bus to a subway station, where we bought our tokens (Tickets) and proceeded to the actual subway platform. As we were walking, I heard a train arriving and it was on the right platform -- my platform. I didn't want to leave my friends so abruptly without saying goodbye properly, but I wanted to get home to study for a Psychology exam (Which was today, and I think I did alright). So, I quickly ran to the train and while running, the subway doors behind me closed on my bag. I looked behind me and tried to pull my bag and it didn't work (Shocking, I know) and I then proceeded to manually open the doors so my bag could slide through.

The doors wouldn't budge.

At this time, I thought "I have to get out of the train before it leaves so I can take the next one, I can't leave my bag with my notes here," so then I opened the doors as hard as I could to get out of the train. Now, at this point, everyone on the train was looking at me as were people on the platform (Including my friends). Anywho, I started to re-open the doors and I began to step through them when the doors suddenly shut once more on my body.

I was stuck between the doors.

I became slightly panicked as the train was almost leaving (I was in the conductor's compartment) and I had to get out as soon as possible. So, I pushed the doors with all my might and managed to get my whole body on the platform -- with the exception of my left foot, still stuck in the subway doors. Now, the train was going to leave now, so I had to get my foot out of the doors or I was going to be dragged along the platform and to put it bluntly, smushed against the subway tunnel walls.

So, without further ado, I pulled as hard as I could to get my foot out and I managed to do it just right before the train started to move. I survived.

After this, I began to laugh hysterically with my friends coming over, and laughing along with me, but saying, "We know it's not funny, but are you okay?" and continously trying to make me feel better. I have never laughed so hard in my life (I actually have stomach cramps today because of it).

Now, this may seem like a LONG time to get off the train but this was all in a span of about 2 minutes, right before the train was leaving. I don't even know why the conductor didn't open the door when he noticed someone RIGHT in front of him was stuck, and more importantly, that an idiot like me would've died!

But, that's why I'm posting it, because I want you all to know not to be a complete moron like I am and wait for the next frickin' train to arrive.

Been in a similar situation myself except it was on a train in England and the doors shut before half of our party could leave the train leaving us all separated. Wouldn't have minded if I hadn't got stuck on the train with a load of 8-15 year olds and I wasn't being paid overtime. Luckily, we all came out of it fine but it took us another two hours to get home.

I don't live in a big city, so I don't go on a subway (Though I have when I was in London), but I go on the light rail daily which is semi-similar, but not really because it's not underground. I freak out pretty much every day when I'm getting on because I think it's going to close on me. I mean, there's a button to press to open the doors but after it says "train is departing, please stand clear" you can't really do anything about it until maybe the next stop. Luckily, I've never been in that situation. I'm glad you're safe though, that could have turned ugly fast.

I'm glad you came out alright. I get nervous on things with automatic doors. It's another reason I don't like elevators. lol

Don't they put sensors on elevators so they open back up if someone's coming through?

Haha, reminds me of that Far Side where the guy has a lion in an elevator. As the door closes, he tells the other occupants not to worry- the lion won't react unless startled.

And then the elevator door closes on his tail.

Haha. Not all elevators have the sensors or they don't all work or something because I've seen them close on people and not open without strong prying. It'd be really nice if they did, though.

The reminds me of this one time my coworkers and I were leaving work and getting into the elevator to go home. This other lady was coming and I pressed the button to keep the door open. The doors kept closing, though, so I kept pushing the button. The other people were looking at me weird, but I was just concerned with trying to let this lady in and couldn't figure out what was going wrong. Just as the lady came up to the elevator, the doors closed in her face. She *almost* made it. Turns out the whole time I was pressing the "close doors" button. lol That totally explained the shocked expressions on my coworkers. One of them said, "Ooh, she's going to be mad at you tomorrow." haha Oops.

You'd probably HATE the elevators at my school because the permit expired over a year ago. I only go on them when I absolutely need to, like if I'm carrying my laptop or something really heavy, but even then I feel like I'm risking my life.

Actually, I'm more scared of escalators because when I was little, my grandma told me that people could get caught in them (She probably meant like their pants or maybe hair or something). I'm sure it may have happened before, but she is known to exaggerate quite a bit.

Back on topic: didn't people on the subway try to get help for you, or were they just staring?

Eek, that's scary. When I went to Paris for Spring Break last year, that happened to people in my group twice. Once it happened to one of the teachers/chaperones. It was rush hour, and people were crammed in the subway like sardines. She was about to get on, but the doors closed on her bag, and one of the people in our group managed to get the bag into the subway before it left. The doors also closed on a person later on in the trip.

It's bad to get a body part or a bag stuck in the subways in Paris because half the people just look at you and the other half start snickering. <_<

It's usually shoelaces that get caught on the sides of the moving steps, which if you're an adult isn't much of a problem. Ss a child you might not be able to yank free, so you could fall and hurt yourself pretty badly.

See, Hong Kong has sensible trains. The doors actually detect if something is stuck there and reopen. Canada should get trains like that.
