I feel melancholy...

Sat Apr 07, 2007 9:13 am

What is it about the weather? Does cold weather make us feel down, or it is the change from sunny to winter to makes us feel weird? I can't describe this feeling, it's like... really melancholy... like sad...

Anyway, I'm gonna go clean up my room and try to feel a little better. This cold weather had got me in this weird melancholy I'm trying to shake off. Jesus christ, i even went and bought a book today called "Dying was the best thing that ever happened to me".

Don't be fooled, it's actually an inspirational book. its about a doctor and the lessons he learned from his patients.

You could suffer from SAD- Seasonal Affective Disorder, you may just show sub-syndromal symptons, though.

People who have suffer from usually show symptons of sleep problems, overeating, depression, lethargic, physical pain; joint pain or stomach problems, lowered resistance to infections.

SAD effects about 10% of the people in the World, 2% being in North Europe, and is more common further away from the Equator. However, having snow on the ground actually makes it less common.

I'm beginning to think I have SAD haha. Paranoia or what?

I think I have SAD too - or at least my depression is worse in the winter. I get depressed in summer time too, but it all seems so much worse in the winter cos I can't go outside; I'm stuck in the house all day.

You've always seemed like a bubbly, happy type person to me Kym. Now that winter has arrived for you and it's affected you this badly, it does seem like you very well might have SAD. Perhaps you should go to your doctor and see what he/she has to say. They will probably give you a few leaflets too.

Somehow I think there's a difference between the winter blues and depression....

Even so, I think it's better he go see a doctor about this. Some people just believe that they have the winter blues and not do anything about it, when in fact, they have a bigger problem. If he does have SAD it's best he go now rather than later and nip it in the bud, so to speak.

This actually underlines a whole different problem, actually, and before you say 'That is what you get on a ship!', don't be so irrational. Cabin fever is just a slang phrase for claustophobic reaction that takes place when a group of people are isolated/shut in together for an extended time. (Any group of people, really, colleagues, family, friends etc.)

Overall, being confined to a small area, such as a house, or well, a cabin of a ship, with or without other people can cause symptons of cabin fever.

Cabin fever causes symptons like restlessness, irritability and an overall feeling of depression.

The only cure is to go outside for a walk or something, regardless of the weather. Just wrap up warm! :)

Hahaha people... ok I'm back to normal now. All it took was shopping with mum and Jessie, buying a shirt and a singlet, then watching "300" with my mum and dad, then sitting in front of a heater reading "Dying was the best thing that ever happened to me" while listening to mum and dad entertain two of their good friends while Jessie watched "Wife Swap" on TV. I then ate chicken wings.

You guys should try it sometime.

That sounds good, I think I might try that sometime...Sounds like a good book too..xD

You're not alone, this so-called "spring" is worse than winter. And thanks to Global Warming we didn't get any snow this winter. No snow=no snowmobiling =
I don't think I've ever said these words before, but I can't wait until summer...=(

I'm lucky in that respect. Our spring is like summer right now. I was outside in a pair of thin trousers and a white short sleeved top about 15 minutes ago and had to come inside because the sun was burning my arms and face. Didn't ever think I'd get a sunburn in a UK early April.

We had a mild winter too with about 5 short cold spells spanning from December to March...and we had snow too, when we had the cold spells. But apart from that it's been a good winter. I wonder if we're going to have a scorching summer...?

See, I get more mopey in summer, not that many people would be able to tell the difference I suppose.

I'm worse in the summer as well. Heat makes me apathetic and unable to think right.

And me! But I'm no good when it's cold and I'm no good when it's hot either. I'm better at spring time when it's warm and sunny but not hot. But spring never lasts long :(

I'm insanely cheerful in the summer. I think it's the calling of alcymahol and beer gardens and short skirts. Always cheers me up anyway!
