Gotta get to work! AUG!

Thu Jul 22, 2004 9:28 pm

It's already July and I've barely started my Halloween/LOTR party costume! AUGH! I just made a cardboard gauntlet this morning, and my mom needs to get me to a hobby store so I can get paint for the shield (I'm being Dernhelm again, hopefully it'll be better this year. I started in September last year... I'm so slow X.X) The hardest bit will definitely be the helmet, and unfortunately, my favorite costume site has very minimal tips for those. Any tips- for any of my costume? I've got the tunic, but I still need a lot:

Helmet
Wig/hair dye
Contacts :P
New cape pin (old one broke)
Repairs to current cape
New plastic sword (Either make or buy- old ones very scratched up)
Paint shield, find way to put handle on
Get gloves
Get leggings
Get boots/find a good pair somewhere at home
Make spear with Rohan flag if I have time
Make Windfola costume for my dog if I have time (Come on, it'd be too wierd for Wolfie to be Merry)

That person is the drawf isn't it? Hmm, a nice warm fuzzy shaggy beard :D

o_O I don't mean to sound offensive or anything but you seem a little bit obsessed. I don't even know which character that is. (and yes I have read all the books so don't call me uncultured) Last halloween i just wore a leather jacket and hoped that no one would ask who I was supposed to be.

Uh... yeah... I am obsessed. You don't know who Dernhelm is? Good. That's the point. If you read them and didn't skim them, you would know who Dernhelm was, but what I love about this costume is if nobody knows who you're trying to be, it means you succeeded!

And, uh... no, Dernhelm's not a Dwarf. And Dernhelm most certainly doesn't have a beard ;) Gimli's the dwarf...

Wow, that laundry list is a lot longer than a lot of the frantic Cosplay costume lists I've seen lately. Bravo on that. Good luck with getting everything sorted out, although, I think you have more than enough time to do so.

I read LOTR and I didn't skim it... I forgot who he was. xD

Dernhelm's not exactly a he...

LOTR really needs a lexicon à la HP.

Bah, I was generalizing... You know, some people who don't know the gender of someone usually say 'he' or whatever.

Wow Eo, if you're starting your costume now, I bet it will be amazingly great. And unusual too of course. ^_^

Oooh, oooh! I know who Dernhelm is! *Waves hand in the air* (I already knew, I just didn't figure it out. :P )

Nah, people'll be like "Who's that? Never heard of him. No, you're making that up."

(SL's suggestion was fun. Eow... Dernhelm with a beard. Go SL!)

I thought SL said Derny was a Dwarf...

Besides, I obsess about Dernhelm year-long. Last year though, everyone thought I was Frodo because they knew I was obsessed with LOTR, and they were all like "HI FRODO!" just to tick me off. The closest guess I got from someone I didn't tell was from the kid's librarian at the main DPL. He said "Okay... someone in the Rohirrim?" I said "Close enough". Wheee.

Bah...Forget people being able to easily discern what you're dressing up as! I went as the soup faerie for halloween once and NO ONE knew who I was. But that's half the fun!

This year I'm going as Anna with a gun. Fairly simple, provided I get my hair cut again...

I know who Dernhelm is too! *feels proud* To make the helmet you could try taking a plastic bowl and using tin foil or something else fairly strong to make the rest of the helmet. That's all I can think of right now.

Anyway, thanks for unintentionally reminding me that I have to get to work on my costume too. I have to remake the clarinet-through-the-head hairband again. Hopefully this time it'll look a bit better and the silver paint won't come off on my fingers.

I just finished painting the green part of my shield! O happy day! Yeah, that sounds like a good helm idea. My favorite LOTR costume page, alleycatscratch.com, has two tips for Derny helms. One is a paper template, and it's supposed to be really strong paper like construction paper or tar paper. But it's a movieverse helm, and I was going for how I picture it instead. Plus it'd probably fall apart in a second.

The other tip is to take a hardhat and saw the bill off, use that as the top, and paper-mache the rest. I figure if I can't find a hardhat, I can use one of the plastic ramen bowls. Mm. Ramen.

Yay! I've alerted someone else to the horrors of being late for their Halloween costume!

Any tips for the strap/bar of the shield? I don't know how to fix it on... I wanted to use a piece of my dog's old, outgrown harness and some sort of superglue, but my mom said it was wasteful. She says a curved piece of wood screwed in will do, but I think the screws would ruin the pattern on the shield!
