Things to do on a long car journey....

Well I'm going on holiday with my friend and her dad, but its going to be a 5/6/7 hour long car journey. So I need things to do to keep us occupied. ^_^

So, like and word games, or basic things to do would be appreciated! lol

I drove from StL to New Orleans with some friends in February for mardi gras weekend - left on a thursday, fourteen hours. Got back on Sunday, 14 hours.

I did a lot of driving - I can avoid conversations that way.

If I have to be a passenger, I read a lot. In case I get carsick, I take a 1-L bottle of ginger ale.

Well, I'm not allowed to be anti-social. we've planned to take magazines, and cameras, and were gonna make a holiday diray, that we can write in during the trip...but that will probably only cover like and hour. lol

we drove from Rolla, MO to VA Beach last year. We left at around 5pm and got there at around noon the next day. it felt like forever (espically when you were in a car accident the week before and on crutches).

We had 2 cars & walkie talkies so that kept me amused. We also stopped to take pictures on some really pretty places (like the mountains).

the boys mostly slept. i had to sit in the front due to my knee so I acted as the map reader/co pilot.

lets see...what all did I do in the car....the problem was it was dark for most of the trip so I couldnt read or anything. (and its hard for me to read in the car, i get carsick). i munched on some candy...drank my soda...slept a little...thats all I remember about going down.

going back i was in the other car & we had a laptop & cigerette lighter-outlet adaptor thingie so we watched movies...lots of movies. and slept a little.

but we were college kids on a long car trip...we mostly acted like idiots and tried to pass eachother while mooning (very amusing but not recomended).

Oh that's not too bad of a ride. Dunno if you'd call it fortunately or unfortunately, but since I was 10 I've been trained to think that 8 hours is a short car ride. I wouldn't even bring anything on a 4 hour car ride lol. Anything over 4 hours I bring a backpack with snacks, water, book(s), paper, cell phone (with headset) and charger, cds. For my college years I had my cat, so I'd talk to him a lot.

I live in the U.S., and I'm not sure where you're at, but my dad and I used to keep track of what state license plates we used to see. We'd write down all 50 states, and cross one off each time we saw a plate from that state.

Or, you could play the plate alphabet game - You have to find the alphabet on license plates. Each person keeps track of their own alphabet, you have to say it out loud, and no one can use the same letter on the same plate. (example, everyone starts at "a", and if a car drives by that has an "a" on it, only one person in the car can use that "a". They go on to "b", everyone else is still on "a".) We played that so frequently that we started "banking" hard to find letters. So if after like half an hour someone was still stuck on "Q" they'd try to take one from their bank lol! But we never allowed that, we were just joking.

Another one we used to play, but not that often, it's better on longer trips like 24 hours or more, was to each pick a thing or place, and count how many we saw, and whoever saw the most at the end of the trip won. I suppose you could pick easier things like a certain fast food place, or a certain car dealership, or how many construction sites, etc. It wasn't little things like "how many blue trucks" though.

I think all our other games or things to do require something you would need to buy or get a hold of. Like there's travel bingo. It's been a long time since we played games though. I know they sell travel versions of most board games that are magnetic if that would work for you. There's always books on cd or tape, but I never personally got into those... I read too fast and the books on cd always never seem to go fast enough for me.

Hmm...my "long" car trip was from Orlando, FL to Houston, TX from my spring break trip with 6 friends. Definitely not the time to be anti-social.

We played quite a lot of games:
-Taboo (always a great anywhere game)
-Hangman
-Charades/Pictionary
-Anything from the Cranium box. We didn't move around pieces on the board, we just tallied up scores. Turbo Cranium is super fun too.
-Rock-Paper-Scissor slap game
-The laughing game (to try NOT to laugh)

We also talked a lot:
-Hypothetical Situations: Name of future kids, ideal wedding, ideal life/job, etc
-"Would you rather..."
-Word games such as the "ABC sentence game" (first person would start the sentence with a word that begins with A (ex: "All"), the next person says the previous person's word and says a word that begins with B (ex: "All bears"), the next person says the previous persons' words and says a word that beings with C (ex: "All bears can"), so on and so forth until you reach the end of the alphabet).

You can also make a CD of a lot of fun songs (DISNEY!!) and have a sing-a-long/mini-karaoke

It's a pretty good game, but number plates in the United Kingdom do not use Q or O, and Z is only used in Northern Ireland.

Bring your Pokemon game. If you've already finished it, and it's just sitting in the corner collecting dust; reset it . That should take up some of your time. Though, if you don't want to give up your "trophy" Pokemon; bring your other Pokemon game that's sitting in the corner collecting dust .

I took a 12 hour drive a couple weeks ago, here is what I brought: Lots of snacky foods, DVD player, iPod, Gameboy thingy, MadLibs, pillow, blanket. My sister wouldn't talk to me, or play anything, so we just ignored eachother the entire time.
