does excersicing make you taller?

Fri Sep 07, 2007 1:59 am

my friend is like, exercising makes you taller, because when you exercise, your body absorbs nutrients faster and more appropriately.

i dont quite believe it.

Totally untrue.

Maximum height is determined by genetics.

Phenotypic height is a combination of genes and good nutrition and, I hear (though I can't verify) good sleep habits. (7-9 hours as a teenager).

Exercise will not make you taller.

Well, here's how it could theoretically work:
Exercising makes you eat more, and sleep better. When you sleep, your pituitary gland secretes more HGH(human growth hormone) than when you're awake. The more healthy food you eat, and the more soundly you sleep, the more you'll realize your growth potential.
Does it work in practice? I don't know. I'm 5`2" and shrinking as we speak.

I'm six foot, ten stone and haven't exercised a day in my life.

So unless I was to be a space marine or something, no. No it doesn't.

Heavy weightlifting in your teens can stunt your growth.

Rachels ex boyfreind phil told me that.

I'm 5'8" (above average for females), and I haven't exercised much in my life. I do have pretty good eating habits though, and that can really make a difference when you're still growing.

I think it's partial genetics and partial environment that determines your health.

Like, if your parents are both 6 feet, then that's probably a good average height you are expected to reach (with the exception of some boys growing taller than their fathers). Then I think it's the intake of proteins and such that can help you grow. As for exercise, I know lifting weights can stunt your growth, but jumping can increase it...although, I'm not fully sure of how that works.

well im already 5'9 and only 14, and I'm almost certain that I am going to be even taller(probably over 6ft). I do alot of sports and excercise, and my mum is only 5'3 even though she claims to be 5'6. My dad side of the family though are a bunch of giants, all the women were over 5'9 and all the men over 6ft, my dad himself is 6'4 aswell as my eldest brother.

I think your height can also be determined by what your mother does whilst you are still in the womb as well as factors such as environment, diet and genetics. I read in a newspaper article that in the Netherlands they have the tallest people in the world simply because they focus so much on children who are in their early years or either still in the womb.

My mum was basically on steriods and pumping iron when she was pregnant with me :D

I'm about 5' 10" and have never been one for exercising...I suspect my height is more due to the fact that my father is 6' 4". =P

I've also never eaten particularly well or anything like that...to be honest your best chance for height is always going to be genetics.
