satellite internet

I'm thinking about getting satellite internet. Does anyone have it, or have any opinions on it?

Here in sweden there are two kinds of internet using a satellite-link;

1. You download data from the satellite-link, but still send your data through a modem, thus if this is the case with you, you still need your modem, and games and such that requires a good latency will go crappy anyway :P

2. You both download and send data through the link to the satellite, but atleast here in sweden it's mighty expensive! Only suitable for companies that really really need a fast internet connection and can't get it elsewhere. And I think that the latency (ping) still will be kinda crappy, as all the data needs to travel up in space and back :)

Dunno much about it, but my brother told me it's pretty crappy round here :P

I've heard the same thing. And after watching the DirectTV infomercial at 2am, I've come to the conclusion that I would like to punch the incessantly perky people on it. It's $200 a month here... unnecessarly pricey for the questionable service.

Havn't heard much of it, but I would imagine during bad weather your connection suffers.

Well both cable and satilite internet have there benefits, satilite makes it easy for the aliens to moniter you, while the government finds cable easier. Eitehr way, wear a tinfoil hat and call me in the morning.

I'd get cable myself...

I have it. It does go out in the rain and is expensive.
But it is fast and you can talk on the phone while on the internet.
So if you can stand the price and the fact that it goes out in the rain I guess it's ok.

Hmm. Strangely enough it was my cable installation guy who couldn't stop talking about it. Being a cable guy, of course he has the competitor's satellite, and he just babbled on about how good it was, and how he never got kicked offline, and his tv never went out unless we had a good tropical storm going.

I haven't looked into it really, cost-wise, but since it's either that or dial-up(I asked the cable company when they'd have internet service out my way, and they said "soon" which means mid-2005), I might give it a try. I can only hope it's not $200 a month. That would kill me. I'm hoping it's less than having digital cable and two phone lines. I'll never understand why phone service is so freakin' expensive.

Thankfully I can afford to experiment. Right now I'm living off the sale of my last house, which may last me quite a while. Oh and by the way, if you want my advice, never buy a house. Rent forever. Buying a house is a nightmare. Seriously. But that's another thread I suppose. :peace:
