Jobs

Sat Aug 07, 2004 12:56 am

I recently applied for two positions at my local grocery store and I was wondering, would they call me if I wasn't accepted? This is a problem because my dad said if I get the job, I can't go in Karate (:() and if I don't get the job, I will go in Karate (:D). Therefore, how will I know if I don't get accepted?

Confidence and making them think you're great regardless of your talent is the key.

On the other hand, getting jobs isn't the easiest thing. A friend of mine has went through 24 applications in the holidays. She's smart enough, friendly etc but she certainly lacks confidence. I think that's the real clincher.. so yeah. Uh, just remember;

The idea is to stand out not stick out.

Hmm.. Depends on the place. I would think you would, but maybe not.
Sorry, no help here.

If you sent an application to where I think you sent an Application too. They'll kindly not call you at all if they don't need you.

I know this, cause well--I applied there in october and didn't get a response. I do know the hirer people from our age cause of the vast amount of students who work there.

You should try calling them at least once a day until they let you know what they decided. It shows initiative and maturity and all that stuff. :-D Did you not really want a job in the first place? Rather be in Karate?

Actually, I was thinking that would show impatience and immaturity.

Not really...I've had a number of past employers tell me it helps them remember to actually process the application. They said that lots of times when they don't get back to somebody soon after an interview or turned in application it usually means they keep pushing it (as in the hiring process) onto the backburner because they are busy with other things.

They might send a letter or phone you if you got accepted, the same if you didn't.

it would be the sensible thing to do anyway...

Would it? I know a hell of a lot of stores/shops that ignore you if they don't want you. Sensible? No, it would really rather be time consuming instead of sensible.

I recommend you set a specific date (or something), and then, when that day arrives, and they still haven't notified you via any means, assume that you haven't got the job.

i applied for a job the other day and i asked when i applied when i should hear by, so i know that if i havent heard anything in a week i should try ringing them/going in again to double check.

i think a week is a fair amount, unless you were applying for a position that had a closing date, and then i'd say 3 or 4 days after the closing date.

Yes, I was thinking of a set date as well. If they don't call by the 15th of August than I know, I didn't get the job.

I agree with Melissa. Call them. It shows initiative, persistence (which in some careers is a very good trait to have), and that you are truly interested in the job.

I got my last job because I called my boss three times to ask if I could meet with him regarding the resume I had sent him. He actually said when he hired me that my calling so many times was one of the reasons why he picked me over everyone else. He said that I must have really wanted the job to have bothered to call him three times.

Just make sure that you talk with the person in charge of the actual hiring and not some store clerk, who probably could care less.

And, in the past, it was common courtesy to send out rejection letters to everyone who applied for the job. However, that is no longer the case. Employers get so many resumes and applications now that almost none of them send out rejection letters anymore. My husband is in charge of hiring at his company. He got over 2000 applications for an administrative assistant position that he placed in the newspaper. Needless to say, he didn't send rejection letters to all of them--however, he did to all people that he had interviewed for the job.

Considering you'll probably have scores of other people wanting the job, if you don't get accepted theres probably not much reason why you weren't accepted.

For some reason, Ammer, your post reminded me about shopping for school clothes. Err... thanks, I think. :D
