Fansite copyrights?

Mon Sep 27, 2004 8:10 pm

I don't know if I should ask this here, but it seemed to fit.

Anyway, I'm thinking of starting my own fansite, and an hour or so googling for copyright notice guidelines didn't help at all. Basically, what do I need to put in the notice at the bottom of my page to make sure I don't get sued? Do I need a special permit or anything?

I think all you need is to put this at the bottom of every page:

NEOPETS, characters, logos, names and all related indicia
are trademarks of Neopets, Inc., © 1999-2004.
® denotes Reg. US Pat. & TM Office. All rights reserved.

And link to neopets.com ;) Oh wait, is your fansite for Neopets? If it is...I'm sure there's mor things, but I can't remember...

It's not Neo, it's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Thanks anyway.

Oh...well...do they have a website? Check their Term and Conditions....or any other copyright pages etc.

I'd just put something similar to the Neopets one, except with "Lemony Snicket", "HarperCollins Publishers", or "Daniel Handler" instead of Neopets, Inc.

I looked on the website, but it was suspiciously unhelpful...

I'll try your suggestion, Naniwai, and see if I can send an e-mail to the publishers or something.

Yeah...maybe you even get an interview with them and put it onyour website :

For most free sites, anything that makes it clear that you only wrote the fansite (and not the original object) will do (quite a lot of people write "I didn't make (whatever), (whover) did.")

Tue Sep 28, 2004 1:04 pm

somthing along the lines of "all information contained herein is owned by ******* all rights reserved"
also may be a good idea to list anything specificly that youve borowed somwhere (so if i were to make a warhammer webstie id acredit citadel minitures, games workshop, plus whatever names ive used)
ofcourse if its on yahoo then that comes with an automatic copyright clause and your good to go.
and anything YOU do will be covered by said clause so itll belong to you. (well, the site)

A good first step would probably be to contact the copyright holders, whose name would be posted on the Series of Unfortunate Events website somewhere.

If they don't get back to you, you can make a fansite no problems. Just say, "All characters, references, and idicia related to Lemony Snicket and Series of Unfortunate Events are the property of their respective copyright holders. I do not own them and am not attempting to use them or their derivatives for commercial gain." That oughta be a good start.

dont forget the standard clause.
"this site is meant as a parody/fansite/whatever and is in no way endorsed by whomever"
