Teacher Troubles

Mon Nov 29, 2004 8:18 pm

We got a new PE teacher today. MOst of you probably know that I;m into rugby, and we the squad at training this afternoon, with this new teacher. (Mr. Bevan). And I am annoyed. Very annoyed.

The warm up we did today was diabolical. We normaly do a Gentle jog, followed by a stretch, followed by a more strenous activity, generally circuit drills - Press ups, Sit ups, and the like. What did we do instead today? 6 laps around a 400m track - about 2 miles. Then, we were told to run about, passing a ball. We did this for about 15 minutes. Great fun... What is the point in that!! We are not stretching all our muscles - In fact, very few of our muscles were stretched, as someone pulled a tendon in his arm today!!

Following our 'warm up', we started to 'review' tackling. Of course, it would help if our teachers knew what they were talking about. We all know that we tackle people round the waist...

Bevan: So, how do you tackle?
Me: You wrap your arms round his legs
Bevan: Nope, a little higher - Around their waists
Class: No! You don't, Matt's right! (Well, not this polite. A couple of swear words - Sorry, a ton of swear words were revealed.)

So, what did we do? Wasted time practising 'tackling'. Around the waist. Brilliant use of our time.

The game was fine, we had an hour to play it, and we just ignored all his commands. He decided to blow the whistle when anyone tackled around the feet "Low Tackle!!"... But we just ignored him, and played how we would play it.

Then guess what... Our game was cut in half. Our two hour lesson had been cut in half, as we started our 'Cool Down'. Our 30 minute cool down. That was doing circuit drills, followed by laps.

I have run about 4 miles today, and why? Because of this new PE teacher. Suffice to say, we wrote a letter to the headmaster about his shoddiness. Be pleased to know that it contained death threats, and Mark, a punk, decided to draw the PE teacher without a head on the bottom. Overall quite amusing, but the teacher?

Worst. Teacher. Ever.

No offence but that letter to the headmaster was extremely direspectful. The Head is more likely to take your complaint seriously if you are mature about the issue. And I must say, a cool down is really important to make sure you are aren't stiff the next day. Teacher sounds like a bit of a wally though.

Ouch! I agree with you that he's not doing what he should. Muscles are my major (not literally) and it is vital that you are given enough time to warm up and stretch properly.

The only thing is the letter you sent... I don't think death threats are the most effective way to let the headmaster know that the teacher isn't doing his job properly. Sure it conveys your feelings accurately, but I don't think that it will be taken very seriously. At worst you could be prosecuted for harassment. A calmer, polite letter to the headmaster informing him that you feel like you are endangered by the professor's instruction would probably be more effective. ;)

Good luck with this, and don't let yourself get hurt by his coaching.

Any P.E. Teacher who has you run any significant distance (more than a few hundred meters) without a significant stretching period deserves to lose his or her job. Running does not stretch any muscles significantly enough to prevent injury if you're doing something serious like playing rugby.

Oh, and tackles around the waist are fine...just not as effective as leg tackles. They look better, though ;)
