Act like you think a family member you're really mad at came home, and start shouting at them. Maybe break a few glass things you don't need while you're at it, so the intruder also thinks you're drunk out of your mind (and armed with a broken bottle). I've heard it works like a charm, though you'll have to clean up glass shards in the end.
hahaha really original :P

though my voice isn't low enough for that... xD

Pretend to be talking on the phone and tell the imaginary person that if they don't get home soon you won't get to your karate lesson in time and miss your blackbelt test. :D

Go down and ask them if they need any help, as if they were in a shop. :P

Oh that is scary. I've had that happen before where I think I heard someone.
Or just when I'm being extra paranoid.
I'll start walking really heavily through the house and I'll clear my throat... and I'll make sure my dogs are with me :P heh

I know the feeling of being that scared. Sometimes I'll hear voices or bangs in the kitchen too. It comes from next door though. Sometimes noises sound like they're coming from a certain place when they're coming from somewhere entirely different.

I swear my house is alive. When I'm home alone I hear all these noises like people walking around, it's really creepy. I usually grab something large and heavy, take off my shoes (for stealth) and creep around, hiding behind doors and such.

i am so paranoid that sometimes when I return home and go into my room I would shout "get out of here thief!' in a menacing voice, just in case there really was a thief hiding in my room. :P

Yeah, same here. >_>

I'd say... go around, and start turning all of the lights everywhere. xD That always helps.
