This thread is making me want a guinea pig lol.
My bf's mother had one (it died a few months ago) and it was just the hairiest cutest thing EVER! <3
They'd give it a bath and it would make these cute little noises and it was just the tamest thing I've ever seen.
Specially considering it wasn't handled all that much.
I think the cage they had it in was about.. 2.. 3 feet long. It had a little shelter thing the piggy could go in and I think it might've had a wheel.. I can't really remember.

Buuut.. yeah.. go with a guinea pig then post some pics of it :D

I say guinea pig, or maybe a rabbit.

Or maybe get a bird. :)

Get a hamstaaaar!

I was under the impression that if you have a guniea pig, you have to get at least two, and the hutch has to be very big, like eight square foot or something.

Actually, one of my friends owns one and keeps it comfortably in a cardboard box. She just changes the box every week or so and it works out fine. =)

Guinea Pigs are cool if you can put up with their squealing. I like it but some people don't. :P

Guinea Pig Pros

They're snuggly.
My book, at least, says that they squeal when they hear you coming if they associate you with food. Which would be an ego boost, I think.
They can live quite happily in a cardboard box.
Low maintence, easy to please pet.

And I really don't know any cons for them. Best ask Igg. Chinchillas, I've heard, are nice pets, too, but are pretty expensive. I don't like gerbils. Or mice. Or hamsters. Or anything else tiny and obnoxious. So I'd be biased if I went on about them. A rabbit seems like a good idea, though. There are lots of rabbits in shelters, which makes them people friendly (I would assume) and a lot cheaper.

Good luck with that. :D
i had a guinea pig.. Taking them to a class where people feed it led.. i dont know why they did that = bad! lol... but i had one and it was all cuddely untill it tinkled on my head.. :x and then the second one punctured my little brothers pinkie because i stuck my finger in the first one's mouth because i just had fruit and it will lick the frit stuffs off your finger, he tried it on the second one and it bit into his pinkie.... but still, good choice, the little tan ish ones are cool... but then the brown ones tend to die faster...

My pigs only smell when their cages are dirty. They don't have scent glands or anything, so any smell that comes from them is from their bedding. You'd smell pretty bad too if you had to sit in a dirty pile of shavings too. One bath and one cage change and life is good again! If you clean the cage before it starts to smell, your pig wont smell.

The cages from that site are amazing. The material isnt hard to find either. PLastic from home depot, grids from walmart. The pigs seem to love them too.

I got my grids at costco... and the plastic at Rona.
I'm just going to have a 2 x 3 grid... but my grids are 15 inches rather then 12. So.
Yeah. It should be cool! I'm looking forward to building this. I've got some mini horses that i've painted (i'm a nerd allright) that i'm going to be selling this weekend... so i'll get the rest of my money for the bedding and other materials by selling those guys. Heh.
*nod* Should be good.
Again, thankyou so much for the information. Heh. Wow.
Unfortunately none of the pet stores here currently have guinea pigs, but this works to my advantage as I can now take the time I need to find everything I want for my guinea pig. Plus, I still want to do some more research.
Out of curiosity, have you noticed a difference in behaviour between male/female guinea pigs?

I really haven't noticed a difference between them at all. All my pigs have their own personality, but gender doesnt seem to play a huge role in it. One of my girls is a huge lap pig, loves cuddles, the other 2 hate being out of their cage. My boy pig is very well tempered, easy going and likes head and neck rubs, but if you touch his back he spazzes.

If you are getting 2 pigs, get 2 females or 2 males, not one of each obviously. My boy was a little aggressive when I had my other 2 males, but that was only because he wanted to be the alpha male. My girls did the same thing. If you have more than one, they will do a dominance thing, but only if they are paired together later in life.

As you research, you will discover the small problem with boys... "parts" as they get older. They lose muscle tone down there and have problems... nothing deadly or dangerous, just smelly and messy.

What ever you do, do NOT buy a huge hamster ball and stick your pig in it. Pigs were not meant for that...

Pigs like to chew, so if you are gonna let him/her run around a room for floor time, make sure theres no cords around . Mine like to chew on my desk, but theres been no real damage done.

Get a ferret. Because they're cute. :D

Although they are illegal in some states.

Ferrets are cute but too much maintenance.
They smell even if their funk glands are taken out.. and they're curious as all get out which is cute.. until they escape your room, house, wherever.

I'm Canadian. And they're not illegal where I live.
They're too expensive. And frankly I don't want one. They're not my kind of pet.

I agree with people who suggested Guinea Pigs and hamsters. Guinea Pigs are very nice and easy to take care of, Hamsters are small and easy to take care of but the sleep all day and are up all night, which is something to keep in mind. :)

Guinea Pigs have a smell in the same way that like, dogs do. They only reek if you don't clean them out often enough.
