Inspired by the Spanish Spangled Banner thread I'd like to know how people would feel if [any] national anthems were sung in oh say I dunno, Chinese or Swahili (so the Mexican immigration issues are aside from this).

Now the topic is internationally friendly!

Considering not everyone on this forum is American, I feel you should change this thread title to "American National Anthem" or something simmilar.
I myself am Canadian, and see no big deal in national anthems being sung in other languages. Makes them more interesting. Sure, keep it what it is at ceremonies and what not, but for fun who cares?

I guess "your national anthem" could be substituted for TSSB and English could be replaced with "it's original language" but I can't edit the poll question so I hope people read this before they vote.

I couldn't care less about what language it was sung in, but it would make more sense to sing it in English in official events such as the Superbowl (that is, as long as the official event isn't something that's specific to an audience of another language).

I don't see the problem. I'm not an American but even so I wouldn't have a problem hearing the national anthems for any countries I'm associated with sung in another language. I suppose to some extent even, singing it in another language allows it to reach greater audiences too. It may currently reach them now but at least sung in another language there are more people who can actually understand what is being said in the song rather than just listening to it and recognising it as being the American National Anthem.

My nation has its own history and thus our anthem is english...
But then, Rule Brittania would sound bloody silly in french, but G-D save the queen might sound okay. o_O

I think, especially for the US, where there is no official language and such a huge variety of culture, that it makes perfect sense for the national anthem to be translated. It allows people to show patriotism for America in the language they are most comfortable with - what's wrong with that?

And it might be worth mentioning for anyone who doesn't know that I am American, making the fact that my location is in England rather irrelevant, so yes, I do have more to say about the US anthem than any other. ;P

I'm just going to say it because everyone knows what this poll is about anyways. I think the main reason people are upset about the translation is that there were liberties taken that shouldn't have been when translating the anthem into Spanish. If you want to sing the national anthem in another language, fine, but don't mutilate it in the process.

Our national anthem is first sung in Maori, then English. But the majority of us would have no idea what the Maori would be about if it were stand alone. Accordingly children tend to put special emphasis on the whaka.

I've not seen the translation, so I couldn't say, but to be fair, liberties are often taken when translating to keep things with the tune and so on.

I'm going to leave it there, though, because I think this could be an interesting topic and don't want to have a part in getting it locked. =)

Depends on whether the translator has more or less skill than the FF7 translators.

No, I'm not offended, I sing the Warsaw Ghetto anthem in English all the time, it's just accessibility.

I am, however, completely incapable of singing the national anthem, and I've had voice coaching lately.

Do what you will; but I will hinder it if I may.

I would actually like it, mainly because I think that it would be cool to sing 'God Save The Queen' in Korean or Russian.
