You're all the time hearing about online dangers and hearing about how adults trick children into meeting them in real life, getting their personal information etc. But there are also these same people out in the real world. Where is it more dangerous? Online or in the real world?

Well, Snippy. The Real World. That is where people get murdered, kidnapped or whatever nasties. When you meet someone on the internet, and then meet them in The Real World. That is the danger of The Real World. When I sit on my bed, in my room with my laptop, no one can hurt me. It is when I mix The Real Word and Time Spent On My Bed, that is when I get hurt. Or just in The Real World. Time Spent On My Bed does not hurt me.

But some parents say that in real life you're less likely to be tricked by someone with underhanded plans. Like you wouldn't think that 45 year old man is really a 15 year old girl and have plans to meet. You would just avoid him altogether.

So I guess to rephrase the question, where is a more dangerous place to talk to people?

I voted "being online alone" which isn't true. I wasn't paying attention and accidentally clicked that one instead x_x

Anyway, being outside alone is, in my opinion, a lot more dangerous. If you're stupid enough to listen to some perv on the internet and meet up with him, that's your own fault and no one is actually forcing you to do anything. However, it's easier for a person to kidnap someone if they're alone outside. And it's not something you could easily walk away from and in most cases, you don't have a choice. So yeah, being outside alone is far more dangerous.

There still are underhanded tricks, though. And date-rape drugs.

As long as you don't meet any of the people that you talk to online, it's much safer. Maybe that 15-year-old girl is a creepy old man, but if you don't meet him, it makes no difference. Provided you use common sense, the only immediate danger in talking to strangers online is the possibility that your foot may fall asleep.

The real world is MUCH more dangerous. Things can actually HAPPEN to you. Sure, you're alone online, but you're still in your house or at the library or wherever. And you're never really 'alone' when you're on the internet, that's what's so great about it.

Maybe someone should point these things out to anti-internet parent groups.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen "dangers of the internet" on the news and that special on ABC about catching online stalkers.

In the real world, you don't have that much control over what happens to you if you're the regular average Joe. If a dude drives by and shoots you in the head, eh, tough. No control there.

You are in complete control online. Don't be stupid, and you'll be fine. Tell your address to random strangers and that's your own fault.

Control > No Control

So the real world is more dangerous.

The real world. As far as I know, people don't jump out of the internet and kill you.

Online, the worst thing that could happen to a smart, informed, non-idiotic person would be to get a virus or crash the computer. annoying, but not deadly.

In the real world, things are way more dangerous. you get get shot, stabbed, tripped, etc. randomly by some random person with no warning. you could get forced into things randomly, with no warning, and you wouldn't be ablt to just log off, or close the screen. you'd be held there with force. so, with the existence of physical force in the real world, its danger level is far superior to that of the online world
