Edited for accuracy.
Were Xenophobic, it's in our nature, without it we would be dead.

It is however a shame that noone knows about such things occuring, if i asked anyone at college what it was about, i doubt any of them would even be aware of these riots.
It must be nice to live in a world that isn't falling apart at the seems.

(for the record ive no idea what theyre about, nor do i especially care)

I'm not a xenophobe.

I hate to point this out, but to some extent. EVERYONE is a xenophobe. It doesn't mean we're all crazy white supremacists, but anyone claiming that they're totally, 100% accepting of each and every difference known to mankind is full of it. Child molesters are different from us. Does that mean we tolerate what they do? Nope.

As for these riots, it's sad to see how things are starting to change. It's not just in Australia that issues involving Muslims have arisen. It's becoming a global problem. Because of the actions of a few Arabs, the rest of the Arab community (even people who merely look Arabic) are suffering greatly. I can't imagine what it must be like to be scared of being beaten up just because of what a couple of people of my race did.

Somebody mentioned something about racist workplace policies. Could you expand on that a bit? I'm interested to know what's truly going on with you guys.

Ach, fine, not a xenophobe in this context :P

For some reason a lot of people see Australia as a country that doesn't have lots of problems with racial violence- I'm not sure why, but that's how a lot of people see it. It's quite surprising just how many don't realise the problems, and how right-wing it is.

Anything looks good when you barely glance at it. Australia isn't really in the spotlight often. People just think of Crocodile Dundee and kangaroos when they think of Australia. It's the opposite of what happens in the US. If the US government so much as farts, the entirety of the press is all over it. Just like anything looka terrible up close, things look a lot rosier from a distance.

*shrugs*

Maybe it's 'cause they're all convicts, innit ;)

Yea, and I run about in my kilt tossing cabers at the Wild Haggis while shouting "HOOTS, MON!" at the top of my voice.

I think these riots are just terrible. To be honest, I honestly think that the racists in it are really stupid for thinking they're the best.

we don't really have racist workplace policies, it's that our Prime Minister has introduced a new industrial relations policy, which is totally unfair and biased towards those who are capitalistic by nature and have wealthy parents (wealthy families = better education, better chance, and eventually more wealth for you).

Edit: and most of Australia is made up of immigrants - most of the convicts died. :P

Well that proves nothing except you are incapable of looking after your belongings.

And Fidds, the workplace policies aren't racist, they just put low income earners on lower incomes, and seeing as the majority of low income earners (I'm not saying this in a racist sense, but its true) are immigrants its just going to make them dislike the goverment more. More friction makes more clashes.

All due respect though not all of australia is like this to anyone whos saying it, and Igg dont go aroundf mentioning the convict thingy :) Some people get reeealy offended XD

Did you see anything about prussian blue? Our state minister chappy said he was going to ban them to come to Western Australia, but then a whole bunch of jerks started saying "free speech" and practically invited them! They're neo-natzi 13 year old girls in a band named after one of the gasses used in the holocaust. Very freespeech.

The police presence seems to have worked though. There wasn't anything last night except tools looking for some violence. But seriously, when a guy goes into cronulla with an australian flag, a six pack, and abaseball bat, they just have to say *go home* they can't arrest him. Its ridiculous!

What's even worse is that people are attempting to spread this idiocy.

._.

I very much dislike people thinking we're all crazy convicts who talk and act like Steve Irwin or Crocodile Dundee  Seriously, most of us Aussies think their accents are whacko and couldn't really speak like that if we tried.

And I wasn't referring to workplace policies being racist! I was refering to the Howard government's stupidity by removing the laws that force employers to give employees things such as overtime after working late, double time while working on weekends and triple time while working on public holidays, etc. I don't even work (I'm 14) and I see the stupidity of it. It means slowly weekends aren't going to exist as far as working is concerned, and we're going to have to start tipping employees!

But I was actually pretty unaware of recent widespread racial discrimination in our nation (I go to a very multicultural school and thought we'd learned from our past mistakes) and to find out that I was wrong, and that these disgusting beliefs of white supremacy still exist makes me.... just makes me feel sad really.

That a student body of 1000 from different ethic and religious backgrounds can get along as a community while other, more mature adults, can't is just really sad.

I was taking it in good light despite loosing alot of money, however considering that each time a burglar picked open the hotels deadbolts from the outside then unhinged the sliding door clip and then riffled through my families bags and mine, I find your comment rather ridiculous. I will make sure not to sleep in Australia to remedy my obvious handicap  .

Here in NZ posters saying 'If Aussies can do it, we can too' have been going up in places. Hopefully we won't go Lord of the Flies on our island.

Thu Dec 15, 2005 11:08 am

zorg, I am clearly joking about the convict thing...

Immigrants are no better anyway ;)

(to clarify, again, JOKING. I'm the daughter of an immigrant myself) *sigh*

Keep one eye open at all times, Chris :P

My friend Rachael grew up in Australia, and lived there for 19 years. She moved here 4 years ago from Melbourne.

"in my opinion and experience, i think of it as quite a racist country, compared to the UK, where i live now."
