I know of a few good games that I used to play in summer camp and gym class.

The first game is called "Dr. Dodgeball". To set up, each team picks one player to be the "doctor," whom the other team cannot know. Five or six balls are placed at even intervals along a center line. The rules are like regular dodgeball, except that when a player gets hit, that player sits down, but is not out yet. That team's doctor can go out and tag the player, bringing him/her back into the game. Naturally, the doctor should be guarded well, because once the doctor is hit, he/she is out along with any player who is sitting or hit. The last team standing wins.

The second game that I know is called "Whale's Tales." One person is selected to be the big whale, and stands in the middle of a large area about the size of a basketball court (you should make a bigger area when there are over twenty kids). The rest of the kids stand at one end of the court. The whale says "cross the sea" and the group will run to the other side, while the whale tries to tag them. When somebody is tagged, they are now a "tail" and sit down. The process then repeats, but the tails can tag people who are trying to cross the sea. The last person standing wins.

This is inspiring me to make a website about kids' games. :P

There's a game that we used to play in PE but I think it works for kids too - but I dunno it's name...

Everyone slightly tucks a bib down the back of their shorts so it's like a tail (the more tucked in it is, the less it is exposed) and the aim of the game is to remove everybody elses tail, and leave yours intact. You can do it individually or in teams but obviously the person has to think of how to grab someones tail, without leaving their one too exposed.

Great fun :D

oh oh oh oh oh...
i dunno if someone has suggested this, but Capture the Flag.
Pretty much you hide a flag and the other team goes and gets it and has to be back to there base... if the other team tags you then you go to their jail and you can jail break or soemone else can tag you and get you in.

and then ... i forgot what its called, but you get a whole bunch (7 or 8) of dodgballs and a whole lot more kids (20 ish is good), distribute the balls and its pretty much free for all dodgeball..
you throw the ball at someone and if they get hit they sit. when you are sitting down you can throw a ball at a person who is standing and they sit down and you get up.
if you are holding a ball, you can only take 3 steps, but you can "dribble" the ball and get 3 more steps each time

Hero ball is somewhat like that but you take the last 3 standing in each round and they pummle each other with the balls untill you get one winner.

I'm totally using that tails game thing at my camp. I think the kids would get a kick out of it!

wow... thats ironic. I only got back to read that now, and we just played both of these games today... only we called the first one "Medic" and you hold a medic stick that you tag people with, and the medic can get back in by catching a ball or hitting somebody with one.... or we sometimes call it star wars and the stick is a light saber... hehe..

And the other one we call Whales and Fishies.... the person in the middle in the middle is a shark, and calls over fishes (girls) or whales (guys) or a tital wave (everybody).... we played both of those today... how funny!

hmm...I used to play this game school (teacher said it was supposed to teach us teamwork. The more people you have, the more fun it is.

Only thing you need is space and some old newspapers, divide the kids into groups and let each group have one or two pieces of newspaper (depending on the size of the Group). The whole group needs to fit into the piece of paper without anybody touching the ground in any way, and they have to stay way for 10 seconds for it to count, then let the kids get off and fold the paper in half and repeat the process until you get a winner, i've played till we had to try to fit into a piece of A4 sized paper before there was a winner :P Hope you can use this :)

Hmm....We played one game in my gym class where we had two teams, each with a towel. Everyone on the team had to stand on the towel at the same time, and we raced to see who could flip the towel over without anyone stepping on the floor first. It was a lot of fun^^

And then we had two teams trying to see who could put a tent up the fastest. That was also pretty fun, and then the kids could play in the tents. :D

My personnal favourite, always a hit with 8 to 35 years old (not kidding!)
the Cowboy!!

So, everyone stand in circle, with one game master in the center. Everyone MUST be in a cowboy pose, with hands featuring guns. The game master look at everyone for a while and, suddenly, point someone randomly. This person must dive as fast as possible, when those on each side duel. The first to shoot wins, when the other must sit down (and eventually die in a very expressive way) Then, the person in the middle (chosen by the game master) get up and the game go on. When someone sit down, he stays in the circle and game just jump over him, and everyone must keep track who's the next STANDING person to him. Added rules, the person chosen by the game master can be killed too if he doesn't dive fast enough, and someone who shoot without reason can be eliminated too. It's the game master who is judge for everything and mostly who won the duels.

The rules change for the last two standing people. For the final duel, they both stand, separate by about ten steps, looking in different directions. At the game master signal, they starts walking backward. When they touch each other, they must turn and shoot as fast as possible. Again, faster wins, and become game master for next round.

I've found it a guaranteed success, everytime I tried it with groups or even friends, so I hope it will work for you as well! And have a good summer 8)

oh i learned that at colorado two years ago...

then there is this game i dunno what its called but its really fun.
you get a reasonable ammount of peple (two or three people isnt as fun) and then you play "foot wars". You can move one foot at a time. When you get close to someone you try and step on there foot but the attackee can pick his foot up and do a counterattack. if its a false counterattack they are out, and if your foot gets stepped on your out.

and Cowboy is similar to wink murder ;)

The detective goes away from the main group that is standing in a circle, and the group leader picks the murderer. Then the detective comes back, and has to try and guess who the murderer is. The murderer has to wink at people and they usually die in some dramatic way and try not to raise suspiscion and kill everyone before the detective find out the murderer. Great fun in Drama :D

I remember back in elementary school, we used to play a game we called "multiplicity tag". It sounds a bit familiar to the game suggested by ahoteinrun, but with a few differences. Basically, one person would start out as "it". After counting to twenty or whatever, the person would go and try to chase down the other people. The thing is, if the person who is "it" tags someone else, that person also becomes "it" as well. The game continues until the last person is chased down and tagged by the others, in which case that person would start a new game as the person who's "it".

It may sound dull from reading it, but it got very fun in many situations. If you have a group of kids huddled on a small bridge or slide, one person accidentally being tagged could lead to a few chases. Also, if the person who's "it" climbs the ladder on a one-way slide with a handful of kids, it could get real interesting trying to get away.

Of course, this game works best with some sort of park/school playground area with slides/bridges/tubes/etc. It really wouldn't work too well in an open field.

Thanks, I'm flattered!

And I like this topic, I'm starting in a camp too, and it's been a while since I've animated, so it was a good refreshing, and there where a few I did not know either that I'll like to try!

Thanks to everyone!

If you wanted to get educational, especially with woods nearby, you could make a foodchain of local life. When we visited camps in school we would have a pile of index cards with animals/plants/insects written on them. Each kid would randomly get an index card to hold and you would use yarn to make connections to other kids if the animal ate the item on their card. Other cards could be placed on the ground for habitats that might exist in the area like woods, marsh, pond, lake... and the kids could stand near those areas their animals would be found most. We always got into it and acted out the animals or did funny impressions of plants.
