Our house had a computer before I was born. I think it might've had two, actually. One was extremely old, and the only thing I remember about it is that it played some spaceship game. The other survived far more than any computer today could handle. For instance, my sister once shoved gummi worms and a Hershey Bar in the disk drive, and continued to run just fine for years after that. As far as I can recall, we got a new one because the technology had changed so much, and not because our old one quit.
The next computer we got was a Compaq, in late 1995, that was incredibly frustrating to use, but it had the internet, and my whole family(except my computer-illiterate Dad) got addicted to it. Ever since then, we've never had a computer stand up to more than maybe five years of our near-constant use.

Hmmm.

I remember first using a computer when I was four or five... just playing games that were designed for little kids.

I got my first internet experience when I was around eight...

My firsts experience with keyboards* was probably in 2nd or 3rd grade when they were teaching us how to type. Or, when I was even younger and visiting my mom's friend's house -- she had a computer and this game with a little puppy that I loved to play. And internet... probably 4th? I remember going to a Pooh site and also a games site that had a load of games, but I really only liked a game that had a squirrel in it. o-o

EDIT: *Computers. Sorry. XP

Haha, we used to play "Oregon Trail" and "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego". Still some of the best games computer games ever. :D

We got our first computer in the early 90s (10? 11? 12 years old? Around there) and internet probably around '94 or '95. I remember spending a lot of time chatting on IRC and talking to a lot of awesome people. Too bad chatrooms suck now...

I didnt get a computer and the internet until halfway through 8th grade. I think that was 2000. My father didnt even have a phone until 1994 o_o

It was horrible too, because all of my middle school teachers gave assignments that you needed the internet to finish, and reports that had to be typed or risk points off. I didnt have a ride to stay after school like they suggested, and being extremely shy, I didnt have a friend's computer to use. Our school district had an upper middle class majority, so the less fortunate kids always got the blow off when it came to that stuff.

ZOMG!! I remember Carmen Sandiego too! I still have all my Carmen games. Even now and then, I like playing Carmen Sandiego's Thinkquick Challenge on level three. :)

I think I got it for Xmas 2000, so I was about 10 then, and we get t'internet a few months after that.

However, I had been using computers for quite a while before I got my first PC, but they were those really crappy BBC Micro computers that every school had about 20 of and ciuld only show about 3 colours. They sucked. But I still used them, and they got me used to typing.

Thanks for all the responses!

It's interesting what y'all are saying about computers in school. I was moderately involved in installing the computers at my first three schools. (Okay, I carried the keyboards into my preschool. Shush.) It was fun to teach my friends about computers back then and watch them use a computer for the first time. Now half of them are bigger computer geeks than I am, of course.

Oooh, shiny Carmen game! I was a Carmen Sandiego addict back in the day. I watched the TV show, played the games, and had a Carmen Sandiego notebook where I wrote little stories I came up with. Around the same time, I was completely obsessed with Treasure Mountain, Reader Rabbit, and Oregon Trail.

I still play Oregon Trail, though. It's fun to use the names of fictional characters...although now I almost always pass Harry Potter's grave on the trail. :o

I remember I used to play Treasure MathStorm when I was like two or three. As for the internet, it was somewhere between the end of second grade and the middle of third...Vethie asked me if I wanted to play chess online with her, and I think it was the first I'd ever even heard of the internet.

No, I never officially left; yes, I am gone forever. I have also permanently left AIM. If you need to contact me, drop a line on LJ. Same username.

They showed us the internet in, like, Grade 2 at school.

First computer in my household when I was 9 and then I was all "Whoo look at all this stuff yay!"
