well, as i wandered off while typing this i seem to have forgotten the rest of my point.

That. Actually. Happened?

Forgive me if I sound disbelieving of you. It's not you yourself I'm inclined to disbelieve. It's the sanity of the markers. They should have failed her. Completely. Disastrously. They should not have been able to comprehend it in the first place, which evidently they must have. Have you any idea what subject that was for? (Here I am, hoping that it's one I don't do, because if it is, I will feel dirty and my grades will be much less worth the hard work.)

There's a difference between chatspeak and abbreviations. The latter is for very short phrases or words. These save time typing, especially when in a rush. The former is a whole manner of communication that expects the audience to be able to understand and respond in the same way. (Personally, I think it would only be polite to ask a person you don't converse with often if they would mind if you used chatspeak, especially of the indecipherable variety, before you commence. Not everyone's accustomed to chatspeak.)

Something is very, very wrong when chatspeak appears in a publication to help you go to college. Seriously, chatspeak implies informality and a subject of a non-serious nature. Is college now meant to be taken as though it's one great big fat joke and it's not actually important or serious enough to be treated with some formality and, thus, respect?

I have a new life mission: to indoctrinate small children on the matter of learning a language properly. :)

That's not called indoctrination. It's called education. 0:)

Took me 10 seconds to read (normally would take 3...)

But that's upper 1337 to the extreme.

Anyway, I've seen this on TV ads so often now, it's not funny. And on SMS ads as well. Yes, I get SMS ads from Optus X_x And they write in chatspeak.

You see it mostly in those ringtone ads though, on TV. But I've seen it in my cousin's magazines. Sh'es got a whole collection of all those 'Dolly' and 'Girlfriend' magazines, and just on the covers, you can see titles like 'Top Tips for Ur skin' or something like that. Bah, Chatspeak is killing the world, I say.

Hm. Interesting idea... both rot our minds. I don't know which is worse.

Unlike chatspeak, at least political correctness started with good intentions - the intention of being considerate to others. Yes, PC has gone too far, but in its pristine form it's not a bad idea. Chatspeak was born out of laziness.

I think we could kill both - chatspeak and PC - just by making everyone read Orwell's Politics and the English Language. The premise of the essay is that the deterioration of our language signifies a deterioration in our ability to think clearly. And both chatspeak and PC signify a deterioration of our language.

I'm not sure of the correlation between PCness and chatspeak...

Great link, Miss Padfoot. I'm such a sucker for the English language and that article will provide much food for thought.

No, that isn't your every day chatspeak, but I see more of this than the basic: "how r u doin" and "dat iz lyk gr8". Sometimes the content isn't worth the hassle of having to spend extra time decoding a message that you can easily realize isn't worth reading if in basic English. If I typed that message to a random person on PPT, they would probably get some friends and beat me with baseball bats and bricks the first time they saw me on the street. :)
