EDIT: Just realized, my name is the most common out of all of the people that posted. I thought Robert was less common, common but not #3.
My theory is that people think names are less common than they are because of nicknames. Robert has a bunch- Bob (I think Bob is for Robert o.O), Rob, Robbie; the list is endless. Whereas you don't see as many just plain 'Robert's walking around. In conclusion, people see Robert as a less common name.

Also, don't forget that this includes everybody from babies to old, old, old folks. Probably a lot of middle-aged and old men with the name Robert (or variation thereof) out there.
My first name is actually more common than Natalie, my daughter's first name by fifty-some places in rank (don't worry, her last name is not Morningstar--so I am not giving any identities away). And, I have a really old-fashioned "old lady" name that was old-fashioned when I was given it some 40 some years ago. In all of my time on this earth, I have only run into 4 other people with my first name. My guess is that there are a lot of old ladies in nursing homes with my first name.
