Your sure that's a church and not a Walmart? o_O

Christmas is a holy day of obligation if you're a Christian, no church should not have services. o_O

holy day of obligation? maybe that church realized that xmas has no biblical basis and decided to stop the charade. quite progressive.

Just because Christmas has no "biblical basis" doesn't mean they can't celebrate it.

of course they can! but they certainly aren't obligated to.

Actually, celebrating, what is in the eyes of the Church, Christ's Birthday, it generally is necessary. I believe so, anyway.

I agree, the no "Biblical Basis" got me a little off. Christmas is a religous holiday, for some, and for others it is a commercial holiday. Either way, Christmas is Christmas because it is Christ's Birthday and a Holy Day of Obligation, in Christian Churches.

jehovah's witnesses are christian and they don't celebrate xmas, because it has no biblical basis. there really isn't any "obligation" because christians aren't commanded to celebrate christ's birth anywhere in the bible, nor was jesus born on dec 25.

but i'm not trying to start a religious argument. that's what the debate forum is for.

They're a Christian sect anyway and do not go along with the mainstream belief that December 25th is Christ's Birthday (in the eyes of the Church) and a Holy Day of Obligation to mainstream Christians.

Jehovah's witnesses are so boring. :D

Mon Dec 19, 2005 2:12 pm

I thought the mainstream view was that while Christians will celebrate the birth of Jesus on the 25th December it is only because it is a handy date (that coincided with an existing festival - and yes I'm understating that, hee) but is known to not actually be the exact date.

At least that's what I was told (minus the coincidence of the other festival, heh) in sunday school many moons ago.

the little smileface at the end does not make that an acceptable thing to say. it is inappropriate for you to make fun of any religion.

just because they're not "mainstream" does not give you the right to call them boring. nor does it make their beliefs invalid. i was a JW for many years and they study the bible very closely.

Oh give over. My friend Skez is a JW, he's fab.

It's fair game.

They're not the only ones though, I am a sort of "mainstream" Christian, well you can call us a Bible thumpers, born again, or whatever, I like born again myself, but anyways we study the Bible very closely as well. As people said it doesn't have to be celebrated if you're a Christian, though people do so out of respect, love, thanks and praise, and of course it isn't the same date, the calendar has had many changes over the years and many other reasons, but the birth should be celebrated and it is much easier to do so by having an exact date...

Actually that poster does have the right to say that... just as I have the right to say that Lord Of The Rings is boring even though a lot of people would disagree with me. You may not think JW are boring but that's an opinion of yours as Igg had an opinion also.

Tue Dec 20, 2005 8:14 am

It's not really my opinion. *eyeroll*

Sat Dec 24, 2005 12:11 am

All of the above. :p

Sat Dec 24, 2005 8:13 am

We celebrate nothing.

I'm an atheist, so my family just celebrates the holidays and then ending of the year.

oh please. if someone had said "muslims are lame" or "christians are cruel" or "blacks are lazy" they would have been jumped on. even though it's only an opinion.

calling someone's religion boring is insulting.

While I'm here, gay is a virus that needs to be eradicated.

*tuts*

*sighs*

*rolls eyes*

Incidentally, my friend Manda is gay and her mum used to adore me because when I told manda she needed to get over this lesbian thing and find a nice young man to settle down with, she thought I was serious. Demented woman.
