If neither side can be backed up, then what should we do? I personally think private charities can provide aid all they want. But should the government of other nations spend tax money to provide aid?
Should the government spend tax money on war? The ONE organization is asking for far less money for Africa than has been spent in Iraq. 40% of the people there are Muslim, it may be better to spend money befriending them now, than defending ourselves against them later.
No, we shouldn't spend money on this current war, so why should we spend money on Africa if it won't yield results? It's not like we haven't been helping Africa for many years.

In 200 or 300 years, how are we (as rich nations) going to look in the history books, knowing that we had the money and resources to make a difference, and yet we didn't try? How would *insert-random-country-here* look today if they'd had the cure for the black plague 700 years ago and didn't share it with Europe?
We can help, we might as well try.
And that's the same kind of rhetoric people are using for the Iraq war. If you feel morally obligated, by all means, go ahead and use private charities to provide aid. I don't see how a few people feeling guilty that they are rich should effect the policy of an entire country. The West may be affluent, but it's not like we don't have poor people of our own. I'm sorry, but when it comes to choosing between the poor of my country and the poor of another country... Intrisically, they are equal, but since I am a member of
this country, I have more obligations to its people.
Certain issues I do feel compelled to help with (like diseases and natural disasters), but to basically support the people of another nation isn't going to help them in the long run. However, I am willing to donate money to certain private charities.
Don't be afraid to see the truth, even if no one wants you to. Be yourself and not a fool. Don't ever be afraid to speak your mind and listen to criticism. Dissent is keeps our country progressive and willingness to challenge yourself is what keeps yourself ever evolving.
