When I got on the computer this morning, since Yahoo! is my home page, I saw this article and burst out laughing. I read it, and it kinda makes sense. Click here to read the article.

That kinda freaked me out, but here's two things that don't make sense:

1. They say that Dogger Bank sank from a floodwave around 6,100 B.C. However, the earliest records of history were from about 3,500 B.C.
2. How do we know that Atlantis was 300 miles long and 200 miles wide if there was no such thing as a mile back then.[/url]

Plato probably measured it in some other form of measure, and then later it got converted to miles.

Besides, I always pictured Atlantis as being somewhere west/slightly southwest of Spain/Portugal.

I still believe it is in the area of Austrailia and such, Old maps despict land sunk and When Plato said Atlantic was in the Atalantic Ocean, keep in mind the Atalantic ocean the whole ocean, not just the one we know today.

ireland aint atlantis, atlantis is said to have been more australasia/antarctic way, and other than that plato never went there anyway (please, who wrote about the trojan war 500 years after it ended, on records that had been destroyed decades earlier)
and better therories put atlantis as having been destroyed much earlier (10,000BC i think, the foundations of some pyramids dating to a few hundred years earlier, and all said civilisations speak of "white men who came on awless boats" considering "white man" would turn up for a few thousand years yet thats a interesting feat)
but hey, last time i told of the theory i was personally attacked, so it dies with me.

It's an interesting theory, but not probable in my opinion. I imagined Atlantis to be much father south in a more tropical area. I also imagined that it's still underwater, meaning no landmass above water is Atlantis.

I imagined Atlantis to be in the Mediterranean...

I doubt it's Ireland, though. Plato was the first to speak about Atlantis, and Ancient Greece I don't think really even knew the British Isles even existed.

that & at the time atlantis is said to exist the area around ireland (and greenland, iceland & russia) were barbaric people (waring nations of people that were viking-like)...*shrugs* i guess barbaric people were good at building oceanic paradises? (and im sure they could spell better then me too lol)

there are earlier refferances to a great city, built (seemingly) of the ocean itself
in other words they built upon the entire island, and something like that would be a lil bit more obious on ireland.

The name you are searching for is probably Homer.

As for a theory of it being in Turkey, that sounds plausable to me - there is a sunken city there (that I myself went to) that was submerged during an earthquake in the Roman period, so its possible that such an earlier one could have occured. I find theories of them being in Iceland/Australia highly imaginative but totally devoid of fact - can you concieve of Greeks travelling that far (when no such knowledge of a wider world is expressed in any other classical text) or the local cultures like the people of the Pacific actually constructing them?

If it ever did exist though, it was probably not as fantastical as all the stories nowadays describe it.

Plato wrote very little about history/geography etc. His texts are all philosophical in nature and thus any mentions were usually only used to allude/demonstrate a philosophical principle. Thus its possible that some of his stories are merely objects of imagination. I havent even read the text that refers to Atlantis, so it must be a pretty obscure one.

Aristotle would be a better bet for anything to do with stories like Atlantis.
