I've heard these everywhere.. does anyone know what they mean?

i.e. "I'm the only all american you have on this team"// Is it suppose to mean elite sportsman or something? It's on Remember the Titans.

Second cousin twice removed i have no idea.

Hold onto your seats people... the SL is back.

All American is basically strong patriotism. (You're all for the country and what it's doing, etc)

No, all american is an honor given to athletes. If you're all american you're the best of the best in the country. ^_^

I never understood the twice removed thing myself...

Oh. I didn't know that. x_X

Twice removed? If it's your second cousin in the first place, it means it's like your aunt's cousin, if it's twice removed it means there was a divorce or something like that. I think.. x_x

I found this online:

Quote:
What's A
Second-Cousin Twice-Removed?

'Removed' indicates that the two people being compared are a different number of generations away from their common ancestor.

The other part of the phrase, 'first cousin,' 'second cousin,' 'third cousin,' etc., describes the relationship of two people who are/were in the same generation.

There is no 'removed' used for people with the same grandparents. They are simply first cousins. Similarly, two people whose first common ancestors are the same great-grandparents are second cousins.

But, if John's grandmother is Mary, while that same Mary is great-great-grandmother to Melissa, then John and Melissa are 'first cousins twice removed.' This is because you have to go back two generations on Melissa's family tree to find the 'first cousin' of John.

Put another way, Melissa's grandparent is first cousin to John, so John and Melissa are 'first cousins twice removed.'

edit ooooh it even has a chart, that's easier to understand http://home.insightbb.com/~Grand_Uncle_Mark/cousin.html

You're all wrong! "All-American" just means representing the traditional American values, culture, etc. It doesn't have much to do with patriotism. For instance, you could call a baseball hero "all-American," and an "all-American" family would be one with a mom, dad, and kids living in a suburban house doing various family things. Think "7th Heaven" without all the drama.

Ohh thanks for the nifty detective work! I get it now :) Now I'll actually sound smart lol.

I think all american in sporting terms doesn't mean patriotic etc or ancestry. I think the third-ish post is more accurate, an honour given to top performing atheletes. Appears to be in the right context anyway in Remember the Titans.
