A US man threw a mouse he had found in his home onto a pile of burning leaves - only to see it run away and burn his house down.

Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner, New Mexico, found a mouse in his home and wanted to get rid of it.

"I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," he said.

Though no one was injured, the house and everything in it was destroyed.

"I've seen numerous house fires, but nothing as unique as this one," Fire Department Captain Jim Lyssy said.

New Mexico has seen several major blazes after unseasonably dry and windy conditions which have destroyed 10 homes and devastated more than 53,000 acres (21,200 hectares) of land.

That puts Miss O'Leary's cow to shame. I hope that makes Top Three Newsmakers of tomorrow's Countdown. That is the kind of crazy event that makes that list. Maybe the guy would get one of levels of Worst Person in the World, as long as O'Reilly doesn't do something stupid/evil/stupid and evil like he always does.

MAN!

Thats awesome. Go mouse go! that really is justice. Of course the mouse probably died... and thats sad... but hah. Thats wicked. Sucks of course in the end for the family, but it just goes to show that eventually karma will come and bite you in the bum.

When we do burns at my farm of big piles of deadfall (we have too, otherwise we'd be a massive fire hazard in man made forested areas) we sometimes see mice running out of them after they've been lit on fire. On occasion, a mouse will get spooked by someone walking by and run right back on in, and then we don't often see them come out.
Poor things.

That reminds me of a funny story involving my MENSA member, doctor of chemistry uncle. He didn't want to get a simple permit to burn the leaves on his property, so he decided to burn them in his barn... the barn where he kept part of his tractor collection. Needless to say, he ended up with a few less expensive, collector tractors. We love that story. I hope that everyone who reads this likes it too. Thanks for the reminder ahoteinrun.

Good. I'm glad it burned his house down. Who would do something as cruel as that? The mouse obviously didn't have an instant death and was obviously so frightened. At least the mouse got a good last revenge on the man. I love mice. We have a mouse in our garden that eats the tidbits of food that are dropped near our rabbit's hutch.

That poor mousie! :( That's so freaking cruel. I don't understand how someone could willfully harm a living creature like that.

Oh, how unfortunate!

If he'd only stomped on the mouse instead of throwing it at the fire...

A friend showed me that story (from a different site) the other day. I guess someone thought they were too good for a mousetrap.

True this.

I remember once, when some lady killed a mouse.. I was right in front of her.. it was awful. She was running an animal rescue place.. and there were buckets of dead mice and rats everywhere..

That's funny. And sad, for the mouse and the family.

It'd be an interesting story to tell your grandkids someday, I'd imagine.

Okay! I called it! It made it into Oddball! I totally called it! Thank you Keith for allowing such a great story onto Countdown.

Okay. Back to the discussion.
