I can't really tell a lot from looking at the picture. But I'd love to see an artist's reconstruction of what this thing might have looked like fully fleshed.
I believe if we search long enough we are going to find all kinds of fossils of stuff that before only existed in legends. I mean, people could have made stuff up but it could be that it is something they've told each other about through oral traditions going back to the beginning of time. Now there are a lot of legends about creatures but maybe some of them could have existed.
Although I doubt this thing looks anything like the Egypt Sphinx.
For one thing, it was very small.
I imagine it looked more rat-like than anything.

That's interesting. I looks very rat-like indeed. The head looks crocodilian to me. Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way.

I don't trust this. False fossils have been coming out of China for years now. There was quite a famous one depicting a bird/dinosaur that was put together using glue by a Chinese farmer.
I'll believe it when it's proven. This sounds "too good" to be true.

Cool, but it's probably a sham. Discoveries this shocking and unlikely generally are.

It's a cool-looking sham, though.

Sounds like a program I saw on Greek mythology. A paleo-mythologist(?) was tracing the origin of Greek monsters. She traced griffins back to China, where exposed fossils near gold deposits on the Silk Road were turned into tales of mythical beasts. Griffins are real, but they are called dinosaurs. Pretty cool, ne? :P

ooh, griffins existed? :O I want one! XD

It could have always been a species related to the lion that became extinct early... Or something like that... It's probably a sham, but it still could be possible...

I wonder if unicorns, dragons and orcs actually existed? Well, my brother is an orc. We've not told anybody yet but he's definitely got the characteristics of one.

Anyway, if dragons existed that would be so cool.

Unicorns were based off rhino's, antelope and deer.

Dragons based off dinosaur fossils.

But Animal Planet did a special on dragons! It was hosted by Capt Picard. The dragon vs the T-rex scene was cool :P

Sigh. We need more mythical beasts. That would knock the fundamentalists down a big peg and give us scientists something fun to study. Not saying fusion, eugenics, and nanotech isn't fun, but that would be the closest to letting us nerds be Jedi as we'll get. Big sigh.

Well, they were related to lions in the way that humans are related to lizards. The fossils that were mistaken for griffins were protoceratops--the thing on their heads was supposed to be the wings.

Nothing in the article says it's winged.
