Hi there. I don't know if there is anyone here that can help me, but I figure the more people you ask, the more likely you are to get an answer.

I know someone whose boyfriend stationed in korea has been sending her movies that are not yet out on dvd-- for instance she has ice age 2 on dvd. it's still in theaters for pete's sake. the boyfriend is in a part of the military that investigates people who commit crimes... way to go.
that just cheeses me off.

i don't know if he's buying illegal copies on the streets over there and just sending them to her over here, or if he is downloading them and burning them himself. does it matter?

anyhow, does anyone here know where you can report stuff like this?

i found the FACT site but we're in the US not the UK. anyone who knows how/where/who to report this kind of thing to, in the US, that would be a great help.

....Why go out of your way to report it? Sure, it's illegal, but how they choose to obtain their media doesn't concern you. As long as they're not making money off it, what's the big deal?

-shrug-

Not to undermine your valiant cause here, but there's probably no point in doing this. case and point: Pacific Mall in Toronto. that place is well known for having any movie you want, illegally. now, a while back there was a huge bust made and they raided like $500k worth of pirated stuff. the next day, me and my friends went and the selection of illegal stuff was as great as it always was.
that said, i have no idea how to report it, if you'd want to

It's pointless, because even if you do report it. I doubt it'll be followed up properly. Also, do you know where he's stationed in Korea? What division, platoon?

The boyfriend is in a part of the military that investigates people who commit crimes... is Military Police.

Don't people in certain countries get films earlier than us?

Yes. That's the point. Person A is in Country A. Person A sends copy (may be ripped from authentic store-bought DVD) of Movie A to Person B. Person B lives in Country B. Movie A isn't released in Country B yet. Person B has unreleased Movie A.

It's not really piracy. *shrugs*

Perhaps then she is an advocate of the despicable DVD regions?

Perhaps. But I bet she has an All-Region DVD Player.

There's really no point. Pirating is waaaaaaaaay out of control.

For example, when I was in china, there are people on the streets outside the supermarket that sells illegal DVDs. If I go inside a mall, there are people selling illegal DVDs in trolleys. And if they see the police coming, they just move on to another section.

Yeah, it's true that piracy is rampant, but what can be done to stop it? the laws in place are doing nothing at all. imposing stricter laws will likely do nothing either.
and another thing, pirated stuff doesn't have that bad an effect on the industry. in fact, it does wonders to promote. the pirsted movie stalls always remained fully stocked, and are rarely refilled. this shows that people don't really prefer to get pirated stuff.

Yeah, when I was in New York City, in Battery Park there were a lot of people illegally selling DVDs. Those were truly pirated, as in cameras were taken into the theaters.

Heh. Some guy tried selling them at my dad's office. Except he was a short guy, you know. So silhouettes were on the screen, haha.
