Thousands cheer boy called ‘India’s Forrest Gump,’ but some cry abuse

BHUBANESWAR, India - Cheered by thousands, a 4-year-old boy dubbed "India's Forrest Gump" who was nearly sold by his impoverished mother ran 40 miles Tuesday to enter the country's foremost record book.

Budhia Singh, a slum resident from the eastern state of Orissa whose talent was discovered by a local sports coach, was escorted by doctors and 300 cadets of the Central Reserve Police Force, which plans to sponsor his upbringing.

Budhia had planned to run 43 miles, but doctors stopped him after 40 miles when he showed signs of extreme exhaustion.

It is amazing what you can do when you aren't aware that you can't do it. If he was older he probably would say he couldn't do it. Little kids think they can do anything and well, if you think you can, you can. But I am glad the doctor stopped him from going too far. He might have ran himself to death.

I'd say that's abuse as well. I can't believe any doctor, parent, or human being would allow a 5 year old to run 40 miles.

None the less, it's pretty impressive.

I think its amazing. The boy obviously has tallent and if you don't use your tallent, then it goes away, does that make sense? Also the boy has ran for hours every day for training, said in the article. I highly doubt that if the little kid became sick after 5 hours the first time he ran laps that the coach would have trained him. I think its awesome for the kid to find out what he can do great at such an early age!
