Emos in a nutshell:
Oh woe is me. I cry all the time because I'm such a tortured soul and people can't understand how miserable my life is.
Usually emos have no reason to think their life sucks other than the things they make up in their heads.
Goths in a nutshell:
People used to pick on me at school but now that I serve the Prince of Darkness, dress in all black, and wear black eyeliner and fingernail polish regardless of my gender, people are afraid of me. Self-mutilation sets me free. If I actually saw Satan standing in my room I'd soil myself because I don't understand what I'm messing with.
Bullying in school basically leads most teens to the goth lifestyle. There are of course some people who think Satan is just the bee's knees, but that mostly has to do with upbringing more than problems at school.
I of course offended any and all Emos and Goths on this site who will deny everything I just said. Just remember, it's not slander if it's an opinion.
I think you got a bull's eye on that one jrtman.
Here are some distinctivities (?) between the 2.

Turn your self loathing into hatred of everyone else, but keep it a QUIET hatred, lest ye be merely Punk.
Try using the word "noncomformist" in everyday speech
Suicide is never the best answers. It is not very user-friendly, lacking an "undo" key. Cutting yourself also has numerous drawbacks, but that's another wiki. If you want to show your torment through your appearance, cut off your hair with scissors and leave it all jagged.
Don't go overbored with the entire "Woe is me" attitude, then you end up Emo, and no one likes Emo kids.
This one is emo.
I appearantly fall into the overprotective mother goth category, hah.
