I just found out that I'm getting my wisdom teeth taken out pretty soon. Since I'm a wimp, this pretty much terrifies me. I know that at least some of you have had your wisdom teeth taken out and lived through it, so...advice? Horror stories? Comforting stories about how much nicer it is not to have wisdom teeth?

*whimpers*

I had all four taken out. Be sure to follow all directions, (rinsing/avoiding some things/changing your gauze) don't be afraid to take the medicine they give you and be sure to take a nap afterwards when it stops bleeding. (It'll hit you the next day) Avoid white sheets/nice pyjamas, since you might bleed a while afterwards.

I didn't mind it at all during surgery, I only had laughing gas because of my bad veins. I had an unfortunate situation with the gas, they had it way too high. (I passed out. Fun though.)

I had a lot of pain with them in, so I'm glad they were taken out. :)

I had 2 wisdom buds taken out, while its diffrent, Im sure I have some relivant info.

There is somehting in the laughing gas the reduces swelling a bit. I was told when I refused the laughing gas, I got novacaine, and I was lucky that it didnt swell a lot when I was supposed to swell like a pumpkin. But when getting the amount of novacaine, I had to get three shots in each side, and the NEEDLES WERE BIG. So if you're a needlephobe, go with laughing gas.

If it hurt for more time than the doctor says it suppost to, DONT BE AFRIAD TO GO BACK AND TELL HIM/HER. Mine didnt heal quite right and it still hurt for a 3 days after he said the pain should stop. Once I went in, they put some medication in and BOOM! I instantly felt better, and I felt really stupid for not going in earlier.

Mogster gave all the other good advice that I can think of now, except

It might seem scary, but its not that. With a little ice, the few days of pain arent even that bad.

The produre is different depending on your surgeon. Mine was awesome. I had the non-removable stitches so I didn't even need to go in for a follow-up. My doctor was very fast and very efficient. The surgery was over in 20 minutes despite all my teeth were impacted!

People tend to have a rough time if they don't take care of themselves afterwards or if they're allergic to the pain medication. You want to keep your wound clean and do everything they tell you to do. You also want to put an icepack on your cheek (they'll probably tell you to do this) it or it will swell. If you're allergic to vicoden, codeine, oxycodone, or any other synthetic, opiate derived pain killers, you're going to have a very rough time - that is, your two options would be puking or pain. Let your doctor know so they can come up with alternative drugs. If you don't know if you're allergic or not, then hope for the best.

Don't be afraid to see the truth, even if no one wants you to. Be yourself and not a fool. Don't ever be afraid to speak your mind and listen to criticism. Dissent is keeps our country progressive and willingness to challenge yourself is what keeps yourself ever evolving.

I haven't had my wisdom teeth removed (and apparently I won't need them removed because they're coming in straight), but my parents did, and I remember the doctor told them the same stuff that everyone else has said.

That really suck though. :\

My wisdom teeth are in the process of coming in and every now and then they'll hurt real bad. Its funny (not really that funny) because my band director had his last two taken out and my teeth started hurting...

Ugh...wisdom teeth. Mine are coming through and right now they are really painful. I don't think mine are coming in straight at all. Also, I'm getting a lot of ulcers. It must be related to the wisdom teeth because never in my whole life have I have I had so many mouth ulcers until my wisdom teeth started coming through. I have two on the right side of my mouth, one on the bottom of my cheek and one on the left side of my lip. Both are in areas where my teeth catch them. Joy. And top that off with the pain my wisdom teeth are giving me...not a pleasant feeling.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out about 6 years ago now. I was knocked out completely for the procedure. I don't remember anything about it, but I remember I couldn't eat anything solid for about a week after. My mom refused to let me have any codeine or similar pain medications. I survived on Advil/Tylenol. I really wasn't in pain except when I was trying to eat. Mushy foods like applesauce are great!

Overall, I've definitely been through worse things. Getting your wisdom teeth out is nothing to worry about. Like everyone else has said, make sure you do everything the doctor tells you. Good luck!

I had my bottom two out earlier this year, and there's plenty of advice I can give you.

First: Follow your doctor's instructions. Listen to them when they say stuff like don't use straws and don't eat popcorn, because they mean it. The less time you have to deal with the pain the happier you'll be. :) They'll also give you an ice pack and tell you to use it very often. Do so...you don't always have to be lying down to use it (you can hold it up to your mouth) and, for me anyway, it worked better than pain medication. It also helps reduce any swelling.

Second: Don't try eating solid foods for a week or so after surgery. I had trouble opening my mouth wide enough, and when I could chew something it hurt a lot. Stick with soft foods, like liquids, pudding, and jello, and foods you can easily cut up into pieces you can safely swallow (pasta's a great example).

Third: Don't eat extremely cheesy things like pizza. That stuff will get stuck back there and reek.

Fourth: Be careful about how you clean your teeth. It's actually a bad idea to brush them a day or two after surgery (it could mess up the stiches), so use mouthwash instead. Besides, it makes your whole mouth feel nice and clean and cleans out any new nooks and crannies that may have formed.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

*takes notes* Stock up on mushy foods, pay attention to what the doctor says, get a nap afterwards, keep things clean with mouthwash, take the nice painkillers, and use the ice pack to dull the pain. Got it.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. Keep it coming; you're really helping me feel less scared about this. <3

My friend had the same surgeon take out her wisdom teeth and she said that he used a combination of laughing gas and novicaine and something else that knocked her out completely. So that's good. I'm a complete needlephobe, so I'd really rather be unconcious when he's doing the novicaine.

I'm going in for the consult next week and I'm scheduling the surgery then. How long did it take y'all to bounce back from it to where you could function reasonably well at work/school?

All four, two of them impacted. I have no clue what happened from when I was put under to well after getting home. I have no clue how I even got home. For dinner, I had a liter (?) tub of chocolate pudding. Next day, I had a nice large bowl of pudding. For the next week (thankfully it was during Spring Break), I got plenty of pain pills, gauze, and antibiotic to chew on. There was a lot less pain then everyone told me about, but I think it was just because I was lucky.

I was out for only a week, which was why we chose to do the op over Spring Break.

PS: My doc said I could have the teeth afterwards.... unless you need the Tooth Fairy to pay your bills or want to make sure no one can voodoo you, say no. It is just gross otherwise.

Anesthetic? I have no idea how it's spelled. For me, they made me breathe this weird stuff (probably laughing gas), but I was still quite consious and annoyed when they gave me the anesthetic. You won't have time to worry about it after they finish poking you with the needle...that stuff works FAST. I guess the novicaine came in after that.

I had some time off of school due to a teacher's strike when I got mine done, but I could've functioned at school as long as I didn't have to sing or anything. Unless you react much worse to the pain than I did (I apprantly felt better than most people did), you should be fine too.

Aw, that's no fair! I asked for mine after, and they said no... because they'd been broken up into little bits and thrown away :(

Anyway, I had mine (all 4) out about two years ago. I wasn't particularly nice, but it wasn't toooo bad. They knocked me out with general anaesthetic, so that was great! I'm glad I didn't have to be awake for that one. Do you know if you'll be getting general or local anaesthetic, Pudding? People don't seem to go under general as much in the US, it seems (if that's where you are).

The main icky part is the hours straight after the surgery. I was rather groggy and swollen up, but the worst bit is the stitches (which I've never had before, so I was grossed out) and having the blood in your mouth that you kinda have to spit out every now and again (while being careful of the stitches). And the pain, I guess... but if you have some good painkillers and try and sleep, it'll probably be okay.

My mouth stopped really hurting after a few days (3?) and I was fine - able to eat and talk reasonably normally - after 7. So yeah, a week :)

Hmm, my wisdom teeth have grown in sideways, one of which has partly broken through the skin... everything's ok tho, so no surgery yet *crosses fingers*
