THE US has banned Vegemite, even to the point of searching Australians for jars of the spread when they enter the country.

The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite has been deemed illegal under US food laws.

The great Aussie icon - faithfully carried around the world by travellers from downunder - contains folate, which under a technicality, America allows to be added only to breads and cereals.

Australian expatriates in the US said enforcement of the ban had been gradually stepped up and was now ruining lifelong traditions of Vegemite on toast for breakfast.

Kraft spokeswoman Joanna Scott said: "The (US) Food and Drug Administration doesn't allow the import of Vegemite simply because the recipe does have the addition of folic acid.''

The US was "a minor market'' for Vegemite, she said.

Personally, I just think they couldn't handle the taste ;P

...and NZ apples are banned in Australia :P

This however, is funny. Very Funny. Does it mean Marmite will now conquer all?

You aren't allowed to bring potatoes into Western Australia :( Western Potatoes has a monopoly on the potato market, which means we dont ever get any good potatoes. Anyone who brings in new potatoes, and sells a different breed cant sell their potatoes because Western potatoes stops people frmo buying potatoes frm the rouge potato buyer.

Potato!

:D

and you are allowed to take mangoes on flights, just not in cabin baggage - it has to be checked in.

You spread it on too thickly when you tried it, didn't you?

A lot of people fall prey to that :(

O_o

The first thing that came to mind when I saw that was the fact that all the Australian counselors bring it to camp. They won't be happy...

A couple of choice quotes from the aussielj community:

Quote:
Suitcase inspector: "hmmmmm, let me see... loaded weapon, marijuana concealed in copy of the Bible, passports in twelve different names... hang on, IS THAT A JAR OF VEGEMITE?!"

Quote:
Hang on, the land of over-saturation, preservites and the biggest unhealthiest snacks in the world is banning Vegemite because it contains folate?
They really don't have any sense of irony.

Quote:
yeah ok, well technically, you put Vegemite on bread, so that's adding folate to bread, therefore proving even further that this is stupid

Quote:
Kind of ironic, considering it's made by an American-owned company.

Oh LiveJournal, how I love thee.

I can totally see that suitcase inspector.

Next they're going to have a movie called "Vegemite on a Plane" or something.

That stuff tastes like earwax. its not really something i would be proud of to be honest. I've had some before and ewww. People were telling me you have to get used to it. So you just force it onto yourselves? I don't see the point 0.o (don't worry if you like it, you like it :P )

Anyways it was never popular in the US so I doubt its gonna make a big impact.

Oh good, I thought I was the only one one here that doesn't know what Vegemite is.

At first, I thought it was some sort of pesticide or plant food like Miracle-Gro. xD
