Well, I start my internship on Monday; the university's program is that you rotate at different hospitals/rehabilitation centers monthly until the school year ends (next March) and, obviously, all these places be asking for contact information. I'll be running into people I may be working with in the future and/or people who might want to hire me, so I don't want to give the wrong impression. So, how does this email address strike you:

When you see it, what kind of assumptions do you make? What impressions do you have? Based on this address alone, what kind of person do you think I am?

I would say you were born in 83... maybe 1183 AD.

Your name beings with E... and I would assume you are Setting up Shop.

I would also assume you like to visit PPT.

My first guess would be that you used your initials and your birthday. If they aren't your initials, I think it's good that they look like they could be. I use my initials and birthday for my important stuff email address.
The only possibly deterimental thing I noticed is that it looks like you were born in 1983. When I saw it, I thought, huh, that's younger than me (albeit only by two years). Some people may see your age and that may have a factor in how they view you. Which may be a good or bad thing, really, depending on who's looking at it.
Again, that's just my opinion, I think in general it looks like a good address. And it's great that you're thinking about that. When I first applied to grad school I accidentally emailed a interviewer with the wrong address, which was not exactly appropriate. Let's just say the words "luv" and "slave" appeared in it. XD

I wouldn't include any numbers at all in an email address, especially one that might come under scrutiny by employers. The most "professional" email addresses simply contain your name, mailto:paulallan@domain.com, mailto:p.allan@domain.com, mailto:paul_a@domain.com etc. But a nickname "eilu@domain.com" also looks 'professional' and people can't really make judgements on it... Unlike mailto:xXSunshineGirlXx1994@domain.com. Hehehe.

I agree with Paul--numbers do not make you look like a professional. It's a pain to come up with an email address that doesn't contain them, but it's worth it. Like it or not, many people making hiring decisions make snap judgments about you based on silly things like that. Making sure you've got an email address that's easily associated with your name and has no numbers shows that you're good with little details.

Yup, the best thing to do is create an email address with just your name in it. Usually it'll be taken already, but then you can try varieties of it, perhaps if you have a second name or multiple first names, you can work with initials. If that doesn't work, you can always try a lesser known domain.

As for your email, to me 'eilu' seems like a first name and '1183' looks like Nov. '83. Any two or four digit code at the end of an emailname would look like a date

...Unless your name is Magical Pony Princess, then you probably should use something else.

Honestly, formal email adresses should be made the following way.

[First innitial][last name] at domain dot com

So John Smith's would be: mailto:JSmith@domain.com

If that's not available, use a simple number, or an abbreviation of your state or city:

mailto:JSmith01@domain.com
mailto:JSmithNY@domain.com
mailto:JSmithSF@domain.com

Actually, I wanted mailto:eilu@domain.com but they have a minimum of 5 characters for the username I'm thinking of setting up mailto:eiluPT@domain.com (since I'm a physical therapy/physiotherapy intern)... or would that sound too presumptuous?

Or I could go with mailto:firstname.lastname@domain.com, would that be better?

Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it. I asked a few of my offline friends and they all just shrugged and said "it's ok" ...I think it's because they already know me, so that introduces bias.

The current domain is gmail; does that make a difference?

My brother uses first initial _ surnamebirthyear@domain and has never had issues with it.

I'd definitely go with mailto:firstname.lastname@domain.com (or just firstnamelastname) ... that's exactly what I did when I started jobhunting, actually

If that is taken, you can do what one of my coworkers did recently... add a title to the beginning. For instance, if your name is John Smith, you could try "mrjohnsmith@domain.com". It still looks more professional than numbers or nicknames, but kinda cute/cool too. It works slightly better for guys, though!

That format is what most students and faculty here use. You can't go wrong with it.

or reverse the order - my email addie at the lab is mailto:surname.firstname@domain.com

firstname.lastname, lastname.firstname and all variants thereof are taken the perils of having a short first AND last name. I should have done it from the start. *kicks self*
